Has Rehoboth Beach changed for the worse ?

Anonymous
Been going to Rehoboth Beach for over 10 years. I always felt like it drew a more upscale crowd. It now seems very different. More like an Ocean City/Myrtle Beach crowd. In the middle of the day, lots of drunks, people cursing in front of kids, etc.

It was upscale and preppy 20 years ago. It was already in the decline 10-15 years ago.

Yes, it's no different than OC.

And because they've built a million new houses out where farms used to be, it's super crowded (just like Bethany---but Bethany still skews upscale preppy).

It's gotten so much more crowded.

We are here this week. I have never seen the beach thus crowded and the comparison to myrtle beach ocean city is spot on.

I started going to Rehoboth about 10 years ago with my IL's. I never saw it as the upscale place as they kept saying it was. Those beach trips stopped a few years ago. Now DH, kids and I go to Bethany. There is a difference in people who visit both beaches. Bethany is decidedly more white, upscale preppy. Rehoboth - especially on weekends - does seem to have the Ocean City crowd vibe to it.

I wouldn't want to spend a week in Rehoboth, but it's still fun to go there one evening while we are at Bethany.

Horrors, the poors have infiltrated your upscale oasis.

We are a black MD/PhD couple new to the area. We've been to Rehoboth once before with our toddler, but it seems that the presence of people who look like us is reason for some to avoid the area. We're heading to MV this year instead.

We spent a few days in Rehoboth last month. It seemed about the same to me as it has for the past 10 years or so. We went after spending a week in Ohio, and the diversity in Rehoboth was a breath of fresh air. (Ohio was fine, but very white)

I like Rehoboth (and OCMD). The horror! Lol. And I know MV is Martha’s Vineyard tho I’ve never been.

It is too crowded these days, and for the amount it costs to stay there, I go someplace nicer. Don't feel that the crowd has changed, just too many people!!!!

I'm surprised the PP described Rehoboth as not white. Agree that is isn't really upscale and preppy anymore. Anyway I'd prefer MV over Rehoboth any day of the week regardless of color. Way more fun, better weather, beautiful scenery. Enjoy!

The Bethesda-like crowd goes to Rehoboth and Bethany so yes they drink wine and trendy beer at noon and their teens are stoned.

OC is now more family oriented with stuff like fishing, crabbing, boating to do instead of just drinking with neighbors all day.

No, it has nothing to do with poor people.
Poor people cannot afford the outrageous hotel rates in Rehoboth on weekends.
It has everything to do with all the obese, tattooed, cursing, drunk obnoxious trashy types. They seem to be everywhere.
