They could be anything -- from knitting to bird watching to whatever. Ever feel like you'd like to just geek out and hang with people who care as deeply as you about seeing a spotted cardinal (IDK if that's a real bird -- just trying to make a point)?
Litigator whose #1 interest in recent years has become the market and specifically oil prices. I invest in it myself but it's not about the money (i.e. I'm not trying to talk about how much money can be made or lost) -- sometimes you just want to talk about the latest supply shock wherever or OPEC's latest move. As you'd imagine the lawyers around me 100% could care less -- most don't even want to think numbers ever. It's gotten a little lonely -- was living in NYC until moving here 2 years ago and while not specifically oil, I feel like people were always around to talk market with if you wanted to (not at work but just generally). Anyone else? |
Yes, I'm an introvert and love history, art, film noir, obscure documentaries, and early 19c literature (Wharton, etc). Most people look at me cross eyed when I tell them this. They have nothing to say about it. Back to sports and Whole 30. |
I love classical music. Most of my friends do not. At all. So if I see a concert, I go by myself! |
DH does and just like your oil topic, it absolutely bores me to death. I'll listen and eventually tune him out. |
I love books. They are my passion, which I know is not unusual, but growing up I was the only one in my house that read every day. |
Wow, you’re so deep compared to other people. |
Lol. OP here -- until you DH, I don't even talk about it bc I know the nodding along at home or with lawyer friends (which is basically all my friends) will just be politeness while counting the min until it's over. So when they ask - what are you reading about/what'd you do all day, all I say is -- I got sucked into a series of articles re oil, so what are you up to? |
I'm really not, and that's not how I intended to come off. My eyes glaze over when people talk about science, the economy, animals, and other things they know much more about than me. It's just hard to find people who can be in a museum and sustain interest as long as I can, or want to go see a documentary about Vivienne Westwood. I get that. |
I know it isn't the same as real people, but I've found twitter helpful for these things esp when it's topics where there are tons of professionals who work in that space (so this is more plausible for oil than say literature or bird watching). I feel like they must be putting out articles, commentary and there's a chance to interact with that community. Obviously this would be easier if you lived in Houston as I'm sure that is the talk of the town, just like financial markets are in downtown NYC bars etc. |
I am a younger birdwatcher. I sometimes join group outings to birding hotspots. I'm usually the youngest person by at least 25 years. I discuss birds with my friends, none of whom is interested in birds. I mix in funny stories from my outings. Even though they don't care about the birds, they listen and laugh at my stories. I also listen to them talk about what they are interested in. |

Are you me?? Out to lunch with a friend today jumping topic to topic in conversation -- started talking heat/weather; then shopping -- needing new suits for interviews; somehow I then mentioned the market -- crickets and stared at me like I just said I had 3 heads. Back to shopping and what women look good in certain suits or not . . . I could not have cared less re others' fashion choices yet felt like if I didn't nod along, it'd be a quiet lunch. |
Ohhh yeah, I would love to talk about the impact of the ending of the 40-year ban on US crude oil exports and also the long term potential impact of US LNG exports, especially to Europe. It is a very interesting topic, but I geek on various aspects of the markets. I would think that foreign policy wonks would be good for international oil markets conversation because any oil discussion implicates geopolitics. But these are fascinating, amazing times for oil, and American oil.
Practically all my enthusiasms are unspoken until encountering somebody whose enthusiasms overlap. |
Foreign movies with subtitles. Subtitles have never bothered me, so I'm surprised at how many people will say no to a movie just because of them.
Needless to say, I go to a lot of Bollywood films alone. |
I love all things US history and cannot stop myself from constantly buying books! |
