DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

I saw up thread someone saying the baseball fields are used a lot. So what? ARe they DC kids? Are there games more important than DCPS being able to use those fields after school for other sports practices if the fields were multi-use? Separately from Jelleff, who makes the decision on what to do with the field behind Francis Stevens, at Ellington, next to Lab school on foxhall, etc. Taking 2 hours a day from Maret at Jelleff may be a start but it doesn't solve the long term problem.

Those are DPR fields. DPR is a mess. They have no sense of mission.

You guys have too much time on your hands. Go do something more productive. First world problems.

Having pre-teens travel across the city daily for school activities is a not a problem worthy of attention? You must be a Maret parent.

I am not a Maret parent and I think some of these posts are really a little nuts. Problem can get solved hopefully -- have a full year to do it and put pressure on. Many of those pre-teens are traveling across the city to get to Hardy in the first place, no?

Not aggressively demanding better behavior by your elected representatives is how "first world problems" become something else.

Spoken like a parent who doesn't have to schlep their kids to every corner of the District just to get some exercise

Well, actually no. But for the sizable portion that do travel far to school, adding in additional long commute is even worse!

Full year? The extension has already been signed. What's happening now is a rear-guard action.

DC Stoddert already does pay—a lot—to use Jelleff in the evenings, after the Maret slot. No travel soccer team in this area restricts by players’ residence. Give the prime after school hours to public school and Jelleff aftercare kids, and let the largest travel soccer club in the city continue to use the fields (at high cost to teams) in the evenings. Private schools can use their own damn fields on the expensive real estate they own.

So they have done their traveling. Maret’s turn.

This is not a problem befitting the "first world". Hence the outrage.

Lawyers out there....
Legally speaking, if Maret has already signed a deal, can it be reneged? Or is DC in for a legal battle with Maret lawyers?
