Biden strikes out with King Manchin

I think what Congress could really benefit from is a Google Docs type of system, where every draft is a shared document, where every section of a document has the ability to thumb-up or thumb-down and submit comments and amendments, every change is transparent and tracked, every pageview is tracked, every comment is visible. First of all, let's see how many of them actually even READ what's in the bills. And, call out those who don't participate in the system, because they are not productive members of the legislature. I suspect half of them don't even read them and just go by whatever some FOX News pundit says about the bill. Second, no more back and forth about what someone will or won't support. Third, no more backroom bullshit that gets reneged on because nothing's in writing.

I really don't give a shit. Our civil and voting rights are under threat. Instead of grandstanding speeches the day before a failed vote after a year of ignoring the problem maybe Biden should be focused on that instead of his universal social welfare policies.

Damn. Manchin is willing to support voting rights - stop trying to take a mile and accept a few feet of voter protections and come back for more.

No, he’s not. Stop trying to excuse him.

He's literally a co-sponsor on the Freedom To Vote Act https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/s2747/cosponsors

It was filibustered by his Republican friends. Didn't he promise to deliver 10 Republicans in the name of bipartisanship?

Yeah and Biden promised to cross the bipartisan divide with his 50 years of experience in the Senate. He didn’t. At least Manchin got the votes needed for Infrastructure.

Crossing the bipartisan divide takes two sides. Republicans are staunchly entrenched in assholedom. Can't blame Biden for that. So your point is kinda... pointless.

Oh, please.
You don't cross the divide by approaching Congress with q 3.5 TRILLION dollar proposal stuffed with port. That is exactly where he started.
And, you don't cross the divide by lying that it costs $zero.
And, you don't cross the divide by insulting and demeaning people who decide not to get vaccinated - especially now that we find the CDC has said that natural immunity is more robust than vaccines in fighting Delta.
And, you don't cross the divide by firing millions of Americans because they won't get jabbed when many of them have natural immunity.
And, you don't cross the divide by putting forth a partisan bill on "voting rights" that isn't voting rights at all.
And, you don't cross the divide by insisting inflation is transitory.
And, you don't cross the divide by planning and executing a disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan then claiming it was an "extraordinary success."
And, you don't cross the divide by totally ignoring the southern border allowing millions to cross illegally.

Biden is to blame for every bit of the divide. He has been a disaster.

That's all over-the-top lies, hyperbolic bullshit and manufactured hysteria. Your complaints are a perfect example of why there is no bipartisanship in America.

Nope. Everything above is true.

In RWNJ land, sure. But not everyone is involved in a galloping case of shared psychosis like GOP voters are.

D.C. ultra liberal area here. Its true. Don't start with lies, don't put out massive bills which are asking for programs which haven't passed in over 200 years of American democracy, don't say its free when its not, and especially don't do all that while ignoring rampant inflation.

Finally, some sanity on this board instead of Republicans pretending that Manchin is acting ethically. Bipartisan means “both parties.” The GOP’s stated goal is to obstruct and worsen everything so that the Democrats lose. That’s not bipartisanship, that’s governmental terrorism.

And let's also drop the bullshit that there is anything noble, ethical or principled about what Manchin and Sinema did. They sold out. They took a bunch of money from the opposition party in exchange for torpedoing Dem bills. End of story.

They stopped Biden from doing an end-run while the country was focused on dying of Covid (would be nice of Biden to focus on that too) AND prevented him from nuking the filibuster which we'll need when the GOP comes back into power in 2023 and 2024.

Grateful to them.

The bills are 10,000 pages...for a reason. You want to do it that way - nothing will pass for 40 years.

So Ron Klain - White House Chief of Staff? Or Jen Psaki - White House Press Secretary? One of the Senior Advisors? None of them are as vocal as the other two...

So now Manchin's angry that a WH staffer "leaked" things about him? Huh? What was leaked? Did I miss something?

The White House put out an official statement naming Manchin as the opposition to BBB and put a target on his back for protestors. After they had agreed not to do that.

Remember his car being surrounded in an underground parking garage? And Sinema being chased into a bathroom?

He says it increased threats to his family and he's right. Then Psaki lit up a truly harsh official statement over Christmas and all bets were off. Not surprised. Despite all of them being Obama veterans - none of them seem wise enough to tone down the attacks.

I knew it had to be one of those two. It's all coming out now.

Klain also had a hand in drafting an unusually bitter statement excoriating Manchin after the senator came out against Biden’s Build Back Better social spending and climate bill, according to a White House official.

Manchin has complained publicly about the White House staff, and people close to him say those frustrations largely center on Klain. Manchin has told allies that he believes Klain has pushed Biden to embrace a more liberal policy agenda, adding that Klain must repair the relationship with him if the chief of staff is to be involved in future negotiations.

Been saying this for months. Without Manchin - West Virginia is lost.

We tend to look at President Biden and we think, “Well, look at what President Clinton did,” or, “Look what President Obama did.” The simple fact is they had large congressional majorities. We don’t have any. You get a party or a coalition as wide as this coalition, it’s a pretty predictable result that you’re going to come up short on something like this.

Good.
Question is..... Does Biden know. And, f he's been told, will he remember?
He continues to push it at his public appearances. When will Biden stop?

Probably after he can hold his nomination ceremony for his new Justice and see her seated. He needs a public inescapable win first to quietly exit through door number two.

If Manchin actually said that, then it's a stunning admission by him.

Because yesterday, with the sole objection of Bernie Sanders, the Senate Dems handed Manchin the pen, to let HIM craft the BBB bill however he saw fit, in whatever way makes him happy.

If he's now saying "it's dead" that means he picked up the pen and threw it in the trash.

It PROVES, without any shadow of doubt, that Manchin never operated in good faith and that NO amount of concession would ever get him on board.

Anyone trying to claim it was ever about principles or that Manchin was acting in good faith owes all of us a major apology.

Us? No one cares about Manchin's 'good faith' but you. The voters of West Virginia certainly don't and that is who he is beholden too - a state red than my Christmas socks. Good for Manchin to look towards the future.

He did say it....

The Dems overstepped, plain and simple. And, they overpromised to the American people. Manchin was consistent from the start. And, when the CBO issued the actual cost of the stupid bill, it confirmed that the cost was not actually "zero dollars" as Biden repeatedly said.

Manchin, unlike the other Dems, is concerned about the effect of inflation on his constituents and the nation at large. He probably just saved the Dems a few seats come the midterms.

Honestly Bernie is sounding psychotic and I feel bad both for the constituents who have voted him in over and over again AND the idiots across the country who believe in his fairytales. What has he accomplished in 30 years of whining in the House and Senate? Nothing. 3 bills authored or co-sponsored in 30 years!

He's unrealistic. He's also giving false hope to those poor people.
