Why is giving up sugar so hard?

Anonymous
I'll make it to noon, maybe one, or two, and then I will absolutely BINGE on sugar. Candy bar, gummy bears, cupcake, sugary coffee drink. Why is this so hard and what can I do?

Because it is an addictive substance. Some people's body chemistry reacts to sugar like heroin. The two substances react with the same part of the brain. So you quit, and immediately the process of withdrawal starts, and it gets bad and you brain screams fo sugar to make it stop, and you oblige.

If you really want to stop, you have to approach it as an addict kicking a heroin habit would.

It’s an addiction but can be beat taking it one day at a time. Is there a reward (besides candy) you can give yourself for making it the whole day without?

Because it's an addiction and it triggers the same receptors in your brain that drugs like cocaine do. That's why.

What you can do is eat food in the morning that has natural sugar like strawberries, orange, banana, and switch to dark chocolate with increasingly higher and higher percentages.

What does your breakfast look like? I would do eggs (cooked in butter or oil) with vegetables, and coffee with cream but no sugar. Add a piece of fruit if you want. Protein and fat help with sugar cravings. Drink a lot of water. Plan a sweet treat around 4 (pick a time when you can eat mindfully) and when you have the treat—eat it slowly and savor it—no screens/no work/no reading even. Just focus on the food itself.

If you can stay off the sugar for 3 days, the physical cravings will stop. I do like something sweet to end the day though so I stock up on stevia based treats. The IP products work well for me.

After giving up sugar for a while milk will start to taste sweet. But start on the sugar and I'll be all over it again. It is very very addictive!!!

It's hard because it's everywhere and it's addictive.

I have the same problem! And when I cut back on booze, I crave sugar more because I'm not getting the sugar in wine.

Eat a nice, protein based breakfast.

Eat fruit instead. Every time you crave sugar, eat a clementine, a few really good strawberries or some sweet grapes (the cotton candy ones are great for this). Also, get some Orbitz gum - I like the strawberry and bubblemint.

I'd love to help you get off sugar. I finally did it and lost 5 pounds without even trying and without dieting in any way. We can set up a free consultation to discuss.

It acts similar to opioids, according to some findings.

I have the same problem. I can go without additive sugar for a long time. Grapes, berries with cream, and Greek yogurt are great substitutes for candy and ice cream for me.

But then every once in a while, I'll "fall off the wagon" so to speak and have a little candy or cookies or ice cream or cake at a party. And suddenly, my sugar addiction is back full force. I want to be able to have that stuff EVERY day. It's not enough to eat it once every three months. It's just soooo good.

It's like a freaking drug.
