William and Mary Drug Ring

Wonder if this will hurt the reputation at all.

The criminal investigation began when information was received about unreported sexual assaults due to an increase in drug activity occurring on or around the college campus, Williamsburg police said in a statement. More arrests and charges are possible, authorities said.

DC at W&M tells me the cops had a "safety week" about a month ago where they were nabbing kids for jaywalking and reckless biking, etc and caught a couple of kids with pot then. Some of the guys cooperated and led them to the others. They then arrested them all at once and publicly trumpeted it on the Williamsburg PD facebook page and said it had something to do with unreported sexual assaults - which some believe is their way of actually not dealing with the very real issue of sexual assault. Students also think it's a way for overzealous cops to get back at the "elite" college students.

It's not some big opioid ring - it's mostly some college kids with pot.

Delusional parent

My DC told me ... it was only pot, it's not a big deal, they were just jaywalking. Besides we are so elite stupid cops just hate us.

Exhibit A: Why not to go to W&M and it has nothing to do with drugs.

I'm not delusional, just reporting what my kid told me, which is supported by other students' comments of the police Facebook page. But I don't really understand how busting kids for pot is going to address the issue of an increased number of sexual assaults.

The article said they were busted for "distribution" which is a little more serious than possession - and the cops recovered $14,000.
DC says there is a bit of a drug culture there among some students.
We haven't decided DC's college pick. Can anyone shed light on whether this is an issue there, or just an isolated incident.
8 kids and a prof.

The prof was a visiting faculty member--so 1 year, not a full-time faculty.

And 18 year olds always have a lock on the truth.

And that makes this less disturbing how?

Don't you think a determined student can source drugs at any college? High school kids are able to procure drugs and they have far less freedom than college kids.

Kind of cuts against the overly nerdy rep of the school. Their outgoing President is amazing.

1) it wasn't just pot.

2) investigations lead you to many places that is why it is called an investigation.

I was saying that in response to the parent asking about entrenched culture and also the person who just mentioned "prof" without a distinction. A long-term faculty member may be a sign of a more entrenched culture. Visiting scholars may be funded by another institution rather than hired by the college etc. and regardless have only been around for the past 7 months or so. Doesn't make it necessarily less disturbing, just potentially less entrenched.
