Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
The Asians in this area just sued FCPS and the name of the school wasn't on the suit as an area of contention. Again, if you think he's also great in some ways, how do you believe he should be honored. |
The Asians are suing because the feel Black kids who had lower scores are taking spots from Asians kids. They don’t have a problem with white kids with lower spots taking spots. They just don’t want the Black kids in there. It’s unfortunate, but some Asians have a certain amount of vitriol for Blacks similar to the White Supremacists. I don’t feel Thomas Jefferson deserves to be honored. He was the worst type of sex offender. He raped children and the world would have been a better place without him in my opinion. |
You are welcome to your opinion. There was no raping of "children" that's not factual. You are also ignoring the fact that he basically built this country that is founded upon individual freedom and personal liberty. Because of him, you are free to ignore that, to do what you want to do and believe what you want to believe. |
That is completely untrue. The vast number of Asians (like 99%) don't cares about what other race takes the place of spots they want as long as the rigor remains. In fact a lot of people think the new regulations will increase the number of whites. Why do you think Asians care about anything other than just keeping the same level of available seats and rigor at the school? Do you have any basis for this claim? Seems like a very weak argument. The legal age to marry in the 1700's was around 12 or 14 btw depending on the state, so I don't know how any sex with people under 18 would have been seen at that time. I believe the minimum age is still 12 in some states today although most people don't get married then. |
How old do you think Sally Hemmings was? She was a child. Maybe FCPS needs CRT because people like you do not know history. |
I think he should be “honored” by continuing to be taught about (rigorously, critically, and honestly— not glossing over the rape and human enslavement) in public schools. Monticello, to the extent it is funded privately, is a more than adequate shrine to the man if one must exist. |
When Sally Hemings went to Paris, she was 14. Jefferson was told she was 15 or 16. Two years later, when she returned to Virginia, she was pregnant. When she was in Paris, she was a servant, a free person or color, and returned to being a slave when she returned to Virginia. We could discuss this if we agreed to stick to facts when known. |
You should read some more. Jefferson is a lot more important to this country than Monticello. He was truly foundational. |
| Monticello was his home. It's now a museum, but it doesn't really honor him beyond what he originally owned. The Jefferson Memorial is more appropriate as a place of honor. |
| Even Will Smith supported Jefferson in The Pursuit of Happiness. And he's a democrat and black. Oh my. |
If you are such a scholar, do you know what the age of consent was in France or Europe generally in the late 1700s? I'm pretty sure it was ridiculously young, like 10 or 12 or something like that. Not defending sex with a child, but there does need to be historical context. |
| Look, this is for EVERYONE!!! This thread could go on for another 40 pages and there would be no understanding of the views from each side. As long as you continue to judge one another nothing will change. That's a fact. So, can we please end this conversation? |
When people are advocating for the removal of the Jefferson Monument, I feel like another 40 pages is worthwhile. The level of history some people know is just mind boggling. FCPS isn't going to educate them so might as well be from DCUM. |
| Also what This is for everyone? What is This? Is there something you want to discuss? Just write it. |
I don’t dispute that he was foundational. However, being foundational doesn’t come with a free pass into perpetuity to be enshrined at taxpayers expense. Monticello— again to the extent it is privately funded— is, in my opinion, quite adequate. And because he was a foundational historical figure he can certainly continue to make up part of a history curriculum, though that curriculum shouldn’t skip the uncomfortable fact of his slave ownership, rape, and allowing his children to be raised enslaved. He is certainly a fascinating historical character and, if taught honestly, someone students can glean a lot of information from about the multifaceted history of the country. |
