We need massively stepped up criminal enforcement and convictions in DC

So the response to this was to REQUIRE a criminal to be appointed, by law, in a public SAFETY bill. The Commission provides technical guidance to judges, it is made up of judges, lawyers and academics. No one on the commission represents a victim advocacy group. Some on the Commission objected to his appointment in part due to his lack of relevant expertise. This is really pretty extraordinary at a time DC is making international news for crime. And shows the degree of capture by these groups, imo.

I wonder if at the end of this, they pass a bill that reduces punishments and penalties for criminals even more?

Speaking of DCJL, wtf is a "justice-involved resident"?

DCJL Wokespeak for a thug who has been arrested, is facing trial or is convicted. Of course, the victim is also “justice involved” in a particularly involuntary way.

so basically a potential criminal or a criminal

so we have a weird euphemism for criminal and a member of the city council (janeese lewis-george) who refers to the police as "thugs"

Sad to say DC's only hope is an Republican administration.

The Sentencing Commission provides technical assistance to judges in applying sentencing guidelines. You must be thinking of a different organization.

I mean, after slipping in the item about the Sentencing Commission nominee now MUST be a criminal, who knows what other "adjustments" they have made? And then when Mendo chose not to identify any of the groups that had sought changes, doesn't seem to bode well.

The Council seem to have NO FEAR of consequences from dc voters which is striking.

The recall Allen effort has raised $60,000 in a very short time, that could get their attention if successful or close.

This is insane. What's next, a law requiring that every women's shelter have a convicted rapist on its board?

+1 I suppose they want to have a different perspective. Absurd.

Given that the vote was paused due to blow back from Sentencing Commission members, public and the media, this is really an astonishing more. Their sense of impunity knows no bounds. And it was Chairman Mendelson who nominated the murderer.

The provision about judges explaining decisions not to hold seems to have been dropped as well.

They slow rolled the vote to let the activists have time for these antics.

Members of the Commision are primarily lawyers and judges. https://scdc.dc.gov/page/commission-members-and-staff
