For those counting at home, this is now more than 70 incidents of fake news in the Trump era.

He will not voluntarily submit to another police interview. They will need to arrest him in order to get him to come in.

By not changing it, it reminds everyone of the implicit bias here. There is no way anyone can argue that this site is a fair arena for discussion, that there isn’t a very heavy thumb on the ideological scale. Not when things like this stand.

I hope the thread title is never changed.

Well, I get that point -- that liberals jumped on the bandwagon fast on this one. But I would point out the same happens on the other side, too.
But I would reduce it to this: if this story WERE true, it would be horrible. But it would not condemn an entire group of people -- even MAGA people. It would still and all be two people who did something horrible. Not being true, I would say Jussie Smollett did something horrible.

I don't condemn the people who supported Jussie Smollett in the sense of, "Oh this is horrible". But I do think you have to look at events with some objectivity. Too much electric charge these days.

This is an outgrowth of the "Believe Victims" ethos that is being forced onto us over the last few years. It has become socially unacceptable to simple state that you would like to withhold judgement until the facts are out. We are now required to immediately assume that the accuser is telling the truth and denounce the perpetrator. We need to get back to being objective and not rushing to judgment and engaging in reckless recriminations.

THIS, precisely.

Each and every one of the politicians and celebrities who immediately pounced on this story for the express purpose of maligning Trump voters needs to stand up and apologize. But that will never happen. Such hypocrites.

Jussie is trying to get out of this by simply refusing to go in. Once he goes in for an interview he's getting arrested and he knows it. No doubt about it. This is great.

Run Jussie run!!!

It is the tinder-box-angry public that is responsible for using his alleged crime as a political platform. When it turned out to be false, they have to turn on him, accusing him of forever damaging the climate for true victims of hate crimes.

He never should have been given that power. He's just one guy.

Oh? He didn't deliberately invoke "MAGA" having seen the witch hunting that causes?
He didn't deliberately say he was called hateful words that also incite aggressive response - and he wasn't aware that many people argue that aggressive responses to words like the n-word are justified and appropriate?

With the vitriol people dumped on a teenager who dared to exist, it's a bit much to expect us to agree that a grown man shouldn't be held accountable for his actual actions and to believe he couldn't have known that he was deliberately setting up a situation that would ignite.

Compare his incredibly damaging stunt to a boy who simply dared to smile at a N.A. protester... liberals have gone truly insane.

+1

Ever heard of The Boy Who Cried Wolf? Smollett has done far more harm than good, and for that alone he should be ashamed.

If he did it to highlight the neccesity of the Kamela Harris anti-lynching law than maybe it was worth doing? That said, the investigation has not been concluded and many of the "leaks" have been dubious.

You can’t possibly be that stupid.

NP here. Don't call people stupid. That is part of the problem. Make your point without insulting people.

DP. Do you give the same advice to liberals who call Trump voters all manner of insults? No, didn’t think so.

Nah, it'll go away. Coverage will be stopping soon, it will rapidly be forgotten.

The most powerful weapon the media has is the power to *not* cover something. And they use it often.

Well, I actually do. Every post I have contributed has been about thinking independently, employing healthy skepticism, not immediately rushing to judgment. I think insults on both sides don't help. They take the reasoning out of discussion. Saying someone is stupid shuts down the ability to hear each other.

I think as a society we have far too high a tolerance for stupidity. Everything you say is reasonable but it requires intelligence and reading some of the posts on this thread clearly shows many people simply aren’t equipped for the task.
