RM Cluster Overcrowding?

Anonymous
"My daughter attended overcrowded school and used trailers, she turned out fine. I want 150% limit. "

With such statements coming from our city leaders, it's safe to say that Rockville is changing rapidly. Any family valuing education should think hard before buying in Rockville.

Kings farm has boundary dividing in middle. One part goes to RM and other goes to Gaithersburg. I happen to buy in RM part even though I had to stretch it.. Everyone buying in RM part pays a premium. Not in too distant future this premium is going to disappear by RM part decreasing in value and matching Gaithersburg part. Entire RM cluster should lose 10-15% of property value with the direction we are headed.

All these testimonies are waste of time. Just 3-4 years ago, same drama happened to change the limit to 120% from 110%. Same set of people are asking to relax it more. They don't care of kids. Action speaks louder than words.

If you want to see stop of this madness then simply organize your neighborhoods during voting time.

They probably hate puppies and kittens, too.

Either that, or they understand that situations are complicated, and different people can have different ideas about what's best to do, in good faith.

Well, if they were talking about 100% to 110% then I could understand that they are trying to prioritize development over education.

110% to 120% and same city leaders asking to relax it more?? It's just madness and city is headed in direction where families valuing education will be replaced by families not valuing education.

I thought that we were talking about schools, not resident property-owners' fears that they won't be able to sell their properties for as much as they'd anticipated.

He's willing to "compromise", but I'm not sure what that means.

The Rockville City Council member who had been met with a fierce backlash for a proposal to raise school capacity at Richard Montgomery High School said he’s willing to pursue a different option to avoid a freeze on residential building.

On Tuesday, Pierzchala stepped away from the idea of increasing the high school’s capacity to the exemption option, based on feedback from several community groups

Do you spend as much time organizing and advocating in real life, with real people, as you do posting anonymously on DCUM about the vandals at the gates of Rockville?

I am not the PP, but city leaders have talked a lot about tax and property value going down has a huge impact on tax collection.

It doesn't mean anything. 110% to 120% from same group and it was not long ago. Now the same group is trying to destroy RM totally by asking to relax more. 130% or exemption to keep building as much as you want in certain areas and eventually after 2-3 years the same leaders will put new proposal again to make it 150% and then 200%.

This is going in one direction and no one can stop it. Developers are always going to win. Kids education is an afterthought for city leaders.

You do realize once Crown is built, your kiddos will be going to Gaithersburg High School, right? It could actually happen much sooner, after the boundary changes are made by this private company they hired. Gaithersburg High is closer to you, and your whole neighborhood will increase Gaithersburg SES while they move lower SES out of Gaithersburg to Crown or other locations.

As a matter of fact, if I were you, I would WANT to keep the 150%. Otherwise they may build Wegmans and move King Farm out to keep us below 120%.

1 - they have not hired a private company yet. They're going to get parent input first (this spring/summer). Then they will put out an RFP. Then, the bids will have to go before the board. If they are ridiculously expensive, you can kiss this study goodbye.

2 - we might find out when Crown will get built when the CIP comes out in October. Emphasis on might, because it might not be in there, and it might not be funded. Unless it's funded, don't count on it being built when they say it will.

3 - the developers don't care what they build, as long as they build it. This continuous building of housing, and not bringing in businesses, is not going to sustain MC in the long run. And I don't mean 'retail on the bottom' businesses, I mean white collar 100K plus jobs. Those are not coming to Montgomery County, and won't, unless we improved the schools. Taking the schools to 150%, does not improve them.

Sounds like Gaithersburg might be the place to be with high SES moving in and low SES moving out...because we know there is nothing specifically different about the education offered by Gaithersburg vs RM.

"This private company they hired" is not making any boundary changes. That's not how it works.

How else it doesn't work: knowing in advance how the boundaries will change. Unless you have a reliable crystal ball? In that case, stop wasting your time on DCUM and start playing the market.

Also I'm really, really tired of "Gaithersburg High" as a metonym for poor kids from Spanish-speaking families that no right-minded DCUM parent would want their kid around".

Agreed. The demographics of these HS will look different once the boundaries are redrawn, and this includes Wootton, and maybe even Churchill eventually. Remember, BOE passed a resolution to look at neighboring clusters when drawing boundaries for diversity and capacity. Churchill is ripe for having its boundaries redrawn. I think the study will also reflect a similar finding, ie, neighboring boundaries should be redrawn along with the impacted cluster.

This is the direction MCPS is moving towards. Look at what happened after the Metis report.

And before someone accuses me of being racist, I actually think this is a good idea. I live in the RM cluster. The clusters around here are lopsided. Wootton and Churchill have < 5% FARMS and not that overcrowded, while neighboring QO, RM, Gaithersburg have 20%+ FARMs and bursting at the seams.

Pierzchala wants an exemption. It's not really a "compromise." Exemptions have been issued for certain developments, such as those geared to ages 55+. This "compromise" that Bethesda Beat has mentioned is basically saying, "We want to find a way to build more and put more kids at RM and WJ. We won't call it a waiver, so we'll rewrite the APFO and call it an exemption."
