New Name for JEB Stuart HS - 9/16 Community Vote

The Keepers argued that only "outsiders" with no connection to the school agitated for a name change, but it was very clear that many students and community members, past and present, were offended by the JEB Stuart name and wanted it changed. That is fact, not deflection, whether you choose to acknowledge it, and it's now a done deal. The new name is Justice HS, and students were asked this week to begin suggesting new mascot names.

$1 million

^ is a vastly inflated number but still immaterial to a $2.8 billion annual budget.

Actually, when all the incidental costs and administrative costs are factored in, it is conservative. And, a million dollars could hire ten teachers for a year. You may think that is immaterial. I do not.

Now I'm confused. These were your words "The School Board listened to Keepers argue for over two years that no one was offended until "outsiders" got involved and rejected such frivolous arguments."

Not a huge fan of the old name...but at what cost to change this one...and the other ones (see for example: R.E. Lee) with all the other needs in the county schools budget.

That said, once a decision was made to change...then OK..but the name they chose is...just...STUPID. Still think that renaming it for Louis G. Mendez Jr. would have been an appropriate way to honor a military leader and champion of education in Virginia.

Not my fight though...you go have your battle(s)

The changes were determined to honor Thurgood Marshall. "Justice" is the closest they could come since there was already a Marshall High School. Go listen to Keys-Gamarra.

Mendez was clearly the best choice. I was for "Stuart" until I saw the presentation. Couldn't believe they did not go with Mendez. It had everything needed. And, "Mendez Raiders" even would have reflected one of his units. It made so much sense: minority (double--Hispanic and Native American); war hero; educator and public servant; community member; kids went to Stuart.

Hands down best choice. It was clear why he was not chosen.

+1000. I don't think there are really more than a handful of people who like the name they picked.

Not everyone agrees with the Mendez assessment. Any choice would have detractors. In time, people will see the wisdom of this choice for the name.

Good luck the next time you want to name or rename a school after a woman or minority. Rejecting Mendez in favor of a generic name like Justice will make that very difficult. I see only theme and geographic names in the future.

Could you please explain the problem with it? I only see one from the perspective of the Board members who voted against it.

It doesn't really matter. It was already renamed.

So, you don't want to tell us why they voted against Mendez?

Only because Schultz proposed it. Funny how she and Tom scrambled to do something for show - when they practice legislative abstinence more often than not. Same people voted against Thurgood Marshall too, right? And didn't Barbara Johns get substituted over?

So it wasn't a vote "against Mendez" as you guys say.

There is already a Marshall High School. That had a lot to do with the opposition on that. Kind of a "no brainer". Would have required new uniforms, signage, etc. for TWO schools. Still cannot believe Evans did not figure that out early in the process--but, no, she thought it was a great idea to name it after Thurgood Marshall when the process started. So did Hynes.

And, the Barbara Johns thing was because Keys-Gamarra messed up her motion. She was so determined to name it after Thurgood Marshall. That's what the NAACP initially wanted and she wanted to make sure that is what they got. "Justice" was the closest she could get.
