What a lovely holiday present to hundreds of thousands of hardworking Americans.

Boo-ha-ha. Govrnment employees are hard workin?

Careful, that’s your precious Border Patrol you’re talking about.

+1. Here’s who’s working without pay, probably until the grownups arrive on January 3.

More than 41,000 Federal Law Enforcement and Correctional Officers, Including:
2,614 ATF agents;
16,742 Bureau of Prisons correctional officers;
13,709 FBI agents;
3,600 deputy U.S. Marshals; and
4,399 DEA agents.

Up to 88% of Department of Homeland Security Employees, Including:
53,000 TSA Employees;
54,000 Customs and Border Protection agents and customs officers;
42,000 Coast Guard employees;
As many as 5,000 Forest Service Firefighters;
3,600 Weather Service Forecasters

More Than 380,000 Will Be Furloughed, Including:
86% of the Department of Commerce (Approximately 41,000 Staff);
96% of NASA (Approximately 16,700 Staff);
More than 80% of the National Park Service (Approximately 16,000 Staff);
At least 80% of the Forest Service (Approximately 28,800 Staff);
More than 30% of Dept. of Transportation (Approximately 18,300 Staff);
95% of HUD (Approximately 7,100 Staff);
Approximately 52,000 IRS Staff

They're not working for no pay! The pay might be delayed for a week or so. Most Americans who have suffered REAL layoffs or job terminations can't relay relate.

Where do you get that information? There is no legislation for back pay.

Your said people were being required to work without pay. That's illegal. They will get paid for time worked, albeit with a delay.

As far as those who are on leave with delayed pay, there's always a big woe-is-me that they won't be paid, and, without rare exemption, they are. In the meantime, Americans in private industry are shaking their heads at this. People in the real world know what it means to lose jobs, get laid off, or have jobs abolished with NO warning. (Happened to me.....had a job as of 4 pm one day, and by COB I learned that was my last day. Along with about 15 others.)

Enjoy your paid vacation.

Show me the legislation that authorized backpay for these workers, including the CBP workers protecting our borders and those Secret Service agents forced to work without pay to protect Trump. Or better yet mail them a check to compensate for the one they likely won’t be getting on 12/28.

They'll get their pay, but it might be delayed a brief while. Go cry to people who really know what a furlough or layoff means....NO Pay. Period.

Know what happens to a whole lot of people when they don't get paid on time? They can't cover things like rent or utilities or car payments. A huge number of these employees arent highly paid, they are just people trying to get by. They don't have financial cushions for this sort of thing. So stop pretending this isn't a real issue for those affected.

You asked everyone at the mall whether they worked for the government? How strange.

This is odd. You act like federal employees are ignorant of the plight of the private sector worker. I was laid off from the private sector, that’s why I went to the federal government.

PP is also ignorant of the thousands of small businesses that depend on government workers.

1. We need more physical barriers (wall) along the border.
2. The government needs to be open.

Why can't Schumer understand that?

Or contractors like janitors or cafeteria workers who do not get pay back.

Ok why don’t you give out your real name and address if you’re so sure about backpay and the 900,000 staff and contractors who aren’t getting paychecks can come for you for short term loans so they can pay their bills when their paychecks don’t come.

Schumer gave Trump 25 billion for the wall earlier this year. Trump refused it.

Trump assumed responsibility for this shutdown. Its on him.

And as far as bad career choices, why are you blaming ME because management screwed up, and staff had to oay the price? Aren't you people always saying that government employees shouldn't be punished for their management's screw ups?

Finally, I didn't make bad carrer choices. I've had a rewarding career that utilizes my talents. I just had real setbacks, as most Americans have, because company owners made bad decisions (or were greedy). My point is that a few days delay in pay is nothing compared to losing a job without warning.

My, what warm holiday comforts you offer. For all the feds living paycheck to paycheck, won’t it be warm comfort if their house goes into foreclosure because the GOP is holding a functioning government hostage to know they might maybe be getting paid back later? I hope you truly don’t consider yourself a good person.

Yup. No one willing to take that bet on backpay in this crazy Trump environment. And contractors don’t get backpay. It’s just an occupational hazard.

I still don’t understand this.

Is it just that Trump changed his tune and won’t own up to his defeat?

Trump has been as bad as we feared and worse. He should be removed from office and his base neutered and stripped of their voting rights.

+ 1 All it will take to keep the government open is for the Dems to stop blocking a way to deter illegal aliens!! Why are they willing to force hardship onto government workers to make it easy for illegals to break into our country?

The majority of US either does not want a wall or does not believe it will work. But I’d still happily give you your stupid walk in exchange for an assault weapons ban and Medicare-for-all. Interested? Didn’t think so.
