To you, what's the bottom of the "elite" colleges?

3,000 colleges, and #28 is "hardly even good"?

Maths! How do they work, anyway?

We're talking about "elite" here. Not just merely "good".

But the quote says "hardly even good". It's a quote. That was what was typed, and responded to.

Words! How do they work, anyway?

Yeah sorry Tufts isn't elite by any definition or stretch of the imagination.

What about "hardly even good"? Is it that?

It's a top 40 school. Be proud of that. No need to get your panties in a twist trying to prove it's elite. It's a futile exercise.

Please read and try and respond to the actual question.

I am not the poster claiming Tufts is elite. I do not know anything about "elite" or why it would even matter. My question was explicitly stated:

Does being ranked #28 qualify as "hardly even good"?

Please answer exactly or not at all. And I am not being coy - I am attempting to point out the ridiculousness of that position from any objective criteria.

Are you just now realizing that these posters are utter imbeciles?

I can live with this as the Elite list but it is an imperfect list. Not sure why Cornell and JHU are not included in the overall category. I also believe Amherst, Williams, Swathmore, Pomona, Harvey Mudd should be considered for elite status. UCLA, Michigan and UVA just miss the cut.

Love this, and the fact that their imbecility is incongruously demonstrated by a discussion of the relative merits of various institutes of higher learning.

Top 30 is good. Top 50 is decent. Top 100 will get you an education. By being ranked in the 28-50 range, Tufts is “hardly even good,” yes.

I think what the temple poster is trying to say is any school that accepted your kid is “elite.” What else could it be? Love the school that that loves your kid.

DP. Top 25 take about 1% of all four-year students. In most circumstances, the 99th percentile is considered “outstanding,” not “good”.

When you factor in the kids, mostly legacies, who are not necessarily as "smart" as the naturally genius kids, then I would not assume that the 1% is fully equated with the list of top 25 or whatever is being called "elite" - fact is there are a variety of reasons kids will go to any school, cost, location, setting, etc. Yes, these schools are very hard to gain entry, but mostly because they simply don't take that many kids, there are only so many seats or dorm slots. But that doesn't mean there aren't a ton of brilliant to very smart/hard working kids any most of the other schools across the country.

Tufts is not top 25

Confused how Tufts, a school that is barely in the top 5 of schools in its own metro area, made its way into a conversation about elite schools.

I would be more liberal and say that the Top 100 is good and the Top 30 in the very good category. Tufts is "hardly even very good" which sounds obnoxious and unbecoming. Nevertheless, Tufts is not elite by any metric.

No one is claiming it is. We are back on topic now.

+1. Penn and Chicago are slightly better research universities, but for undergrad, there's no need to separate them.

I think layman elite is probably just HYPSM.

Most of the nation has no idea what Hopkins, UChicago, Brown even are, let alone how insanely difficult it is to get into Duke, Dartmouth, Cornell.
