Radicalized White Nationalists in Virginia

I have no problem stating flat out that I don't believe Nazis should have the right to free speech or assembly. All of it should be banned. It's not a slippery slope. Germany, Austria, Switzerland, etc. have had these kinds of laws on the books for decades and they are perfectly nice places to live and not totalitarian dictatorships. So you can say I'm some kind of oppressive un-American monster if you want, but it sounds pretty stupid. I don't believe the Constitution was handed down on tablets from Mt. Sinai and is infallible and the best system ever invented--it hasn't even achieved the longevity of the Romanov dynasty yet, and look how THAT ended. Don't fall into the trap of thinking we're magical and special.

The Nazi Party rose to power by co-opting democratic institutions and using them against themselves. It's like a literal virus. It cannot be allowed gain a foothold. The Germans learned this lesson at terrible cost so others should not have to re-learn it. And Nazis do not respond to non-violence. Their entire existence was about violence, and the only way they were stopped was violence. Tiptoeing around and tsking and condemning through Facebook memes and Tweets isn't the way to go here. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Again, there is no excuse for violent behavior, people who acted out in violence against others, except in self defense, should be brought to justice and face the full consequence under our laws. This include white nationalists, Nazis, Antifa members, and BLM activists.

This is the same as saying "violence from all sides" and you know it. Only one side showed up armed with the intent to fight.

I feel certain they were also hoping to get footage or photos of law enforcement attacking the alt-right, so they could use it in their recruitment materials. It seems they've learned a few things from the likes of ISIS.

The right to peaceably assemble is one worth fighting for. It's a despicable and diabolical mindset that uses that right to assemble with weapons and intent to use them.

I've never wanted to see people stripped of their citizenship before now. Round this trash up, drive them to the Mexico border and make them walk over to Nuevo Laredo.

Wrong. The counter protestors showed up with chemical sprays and threw some of the first punches, per the WaPo.

Exactly. Even The Washington Post was forced to admit the truth.

You guys have got to learn what an op ed is.

Dear heart, it was in a news article, but nice try!

Thank you!

I agree with you. I also think that violent protesters shouldn't be "given space to destroy."

Yes. More details in article, but one passage:
"Earlier, police evacuated a downtown park as rallygoers and counterprotesters traded blows and hurled bottles and chemical irritants at one another, putting an end to the noon rally before it officially began."

I don't think burning buildings, hurting people, ruining businesses, ramming cars into crowds, etc. comes under free speech. That is my opinion.

So you propose that it's open season to kill Americans who are Nazis? You think this is how a civil society of law conducts itself?

Why do we even have American Nazis? How disgusting.

So, just to be clear. Nazi assault weapons are fine.

Counterprotester pepper spray is a provocation.

Gotcha.

There is nothing wrong with the "killing Nazis is my heritage" one. Many of us have relatives who fought in WWII. No reason she shouldn't use that on a sign.

Certainly better than wearing a tshirt that says, "Killing Jews is my heritage", or "Owning slaves is my heritage", or "My ancestors supported treasonous beliefs [seceding from the US]".

+10000

I'd think any American would be proud of descending from people who fought fascism and killed Nazis.

It's all wrong. Just like punching someone in the face at school is wrong. Raping is wrong. Stealing is wrong. Killing is wrong. Some are worse than others, but all will get you into trouble.

Why didn't he let the police or the National Guard intervene sooner, before someone got killed?

Because he was following a court order.

This. The Governor was in a damned did you do/ damned if you don't situation. The City had public safety concerns before the rally took place and said they couldn't secure the demonstration area. They tried to move it to an area that could be better secured. And a federal Court ordered them not to.

http://www.nbc29.com/story/36115819/judge-grants-injunction-jason-kessler-can-have-unite-the-right-rally-at-emancipation-park

If McAuliffe had moved the National Guard in before he absolutely had to, the Alt right would have sued. He didn't more them fast enough, and people are pissed.

Here's an idea, maybe the Alt right (and the ACLU, who represented them) should have worked with law enforcement to ensure public safety? Instead of forcing them to allow a protest that the CITY SAID WAS UNSAFE.

It's the job of the government to keep the peace in a situation like this. Some of the demonstrators had the necessary permits, some did not. I don't know why the governor and the law enforcement saw fit to not enforce the law and allowed the situation to deteriorate. Nothing excuses physical violence except in self defense, but it's a failure of the VA governor and law enforcement agencies to not contain a confrontational situation.

The governor said in his statement that white supremacists and Nazis are not Americans. This is wrong. These violent white supremacists and violent Nazis are Americans the same as violent Antifa, and violent BLM members. Virginia has an obligation to issue a public gathering permit to anyone and maintain the peace - it is a core component of government function. I find it reprehensible for a government official to fail at his job and blame one side of a two-sided confrontation.

Lies, lies, and more lies. Your false equivalence are getting old. When has Antifa or BLM murdered anyone? Nine! How many people have the alt-right, KKK, and the new-nazis murdered. Too many to count

Cherry picking your photos doesn't help your cause, in fact it undermines it. Because it only take a quick effort to google for photos like these:

My grandfather did kill Nazis. For proud Americans and not traitorous Americans, that is something in which they should be proud.

I will post again, but some people complained they don't read the Root.

This 20 year old was chased down in the parking garage. He received 8 staples to the skull, a broken wrist and a chipped tooth. His name is Deandre Harris. There is video of this taking place in addition to the photos. WTF is wrong with society? I don't care if he said F you to the protestors or gve them the finger or told them they suck. Nothing, NOTHING, justifies multiple people beating a man with a steel pole.
