Magnet application result High School

Please stop. There are systemic biases for sure against all students of color for different reasons, but no one really knows anything without getting in the minds of the admissions committee and getting more data. We don't know the racial breakdown of the applicant pool, the test scores or anything else. The problem with the magnet process being the way it is and lacking transparency is that it creates this kind of horrible racial tension and us v. them mentality that is really hurtful to our students and schools.

He is wait listed for ecology and humanities at poolesville, rejected for RM and SMACS

Fingers crossed for you. I don’t have a sense of whether those program wait pools move but maybe someone else will.

If your son is interested in humanities, I would totally reach out to Ms. Wilder since it’s such a gender imbalanced program. The pools that your son was selected to have the most movement. Humanities is often seen as the back up to RM. Global is often the backup to Humanities/SMCs and RM.

Will a girl be eligible for SMACS if she has MAP M score in 270s and doing good in Math with all A's. She was not even included in the wait pool.

About half of the kids who get in have scores in the 270s or below, so sure.

That was my point. The PPs claiming there was bias in favor of one group were way out of line and refused to believe that it was race blind.

The racial breakdown of the applicant pool is public and has been posted here recently. Further, the criteria used by the committee have always been outlined on the county's website and discussed extensively at various open house meetings.

I remember looking at this a few weeks ago there were around 300 Asian applicants of 800 and maybe 180 white. This stuff isn't secret. There was a google sheet even.

That is assuring, we did not even get selected for the wait pool, DD is aiming for it. We are planning to appeal. Can we just do the appeal in google form or would it be helpful to email the coordinator too?

I was thinking to email, but was wondering if it will weigh down her appeal if we email directly.

You should go ahead and appeal if you have additional information but your chances of actually getting a spot are low. Several kids DC knows with MAP in the 270s did not get in the wait pool.

Same here with my child but not on waitlist. And with lots of STEM and non STEM extracurriculars.

I'd imagine it depends on who else applies and whether their essays are compelling. Those are definitely in the ballpark though.

Yes, eligible, but keep in mind there are a lot of kids with those stats. Agree essays can be make or break there.
