To me, It shows how we are all socialized to be more sympathetic to protecting men’s feelings and dignity than women’s. They both behaved badly but she is being blamed for everything in the toxic relationship. He was twice her age when they met, consumed mind boggling amounts of alcohol and drugs for decades, and is not taking any responsibility for his part in the mess. He had other ways of redressing his sense of being wronged than dragging them both through a public trial.

I am arguing with my teenage daughter trying to get her to see how unfair it is to blame everything on Amber. DD and her friends think Amber is to blame for ruining his illustrious career while I believe he did that in his own. Amber’s career and reputation has been savaged as well. DD tells me that the internet is siding with Johnny.

The world wants a villain (preferably female), while shared culpability, pesky details and nuance just get get in the way of one sided story telling.

I disagree. We are only now hearing Depp’s side of things while Amber’s take has been out there for over 5 years. This is the first time people really got the opportunity to compare what went on in that relationship from both Amber and Jonny’s perspective.

We’ll speak for yourself. I never paid any attention to their marriage or divorce until this def action trial. My Dad certainly had not either. I doubt many people did. It just seemed like a bad idea to marry someone half your age. I had nothing against Johnny but did not care for his acting as the drunken sailor with exaggerated effeminate mannerisms just seemed too one dimensional. I can’t think of any of his movies where he wowed me as an actor. Ditto for Amber.

I wish them both well but wish they would settle this public trial quietly. Many teens and young people are following it. I don’t think they should be getting the messaging to blame women for toxic marriages but give a complete pass to men marrying young women half their age, truly excessive drug and alcohol use, gas lighting and minimizing damage to female partners while highlighting the damage to male partners. There are no winners here and both are to blame.

Please excuse the typos although some were comical.

I think public opinion will shift later in the trial — remember we’ve only started hearing Depp’s case so far. I’m sure when Heard makes her case, people will be more sympathetic to her. I agree with you that they’re both at fault for sure. What a mess.

I’m not sure. The marriage counselor’s testimony re: her physical and emotional abuse, and the makeup lie, are damning.

+the recording of her admitting to hitting him and calling him a baby for being upset about it. What a horrible person.

I think people are forgetting that this is not Amber Heard’s fault. By “this”, I mean this lawsuit and the Sun lawsuit. She has no choice because he’s the Plaintiff. He brought these suits and is requiring this trial.

I do believe that this toxic marriage and the horrible publicity surrounding it damaged his career. Probably hers as well because they both sound awful. However, all that stuff became public during their divorce. A full 2 years prior to this op-Ed piece. He’s just keeping it in the public eye voluntarily instead of doing what smart celebrities do:
Go about rehabbing their image in other ways. He could have reinvented himself but instead he decides that since his career had tanked, he’s bringing down Heard with him.

No. I followed the London trial, as did many of my friends (we were in a stricter lockdown in the UK so probably paid more attention to it than we would normally have done). Amber was insufferable, just a truly dislikable, shifty person. And her behaviour in court was so bizarre: the big gestures she made with her arms while speaking and the way she repeatedly kept stuffing food in her mouth during her deposition was so confusing. The woman has no self-awareness and she presents like an indulged, histrionic child. We were all shocked at the outcome of the trial.

They’re both nuts. No one heard Depp’s side up until now.

Agree. He is an idiot. He isn’t going to win and is tying up our courts simply for revenge.
I believe he threw a phone at her. That is domestic violence. Case over. Even if she also abused him.

Yes, this is clearly what is objective is—to get his side out there. Don’t blame him. Even if neither comes off well, clear she was an abuser too who regularly instigated their altercations including the hitting.

Yep..he would be silly not to.

I would be so worried about him if I were his sibling or child. As we’ve established, “winning” back what is gone is a lost cause, and there’s a sad kind of desperation in the way he just keeps going for this. And he’s got addiction and substance abuse issues, which seem to rage out of control in times of stress, PLUS he’s middle aged now. After the trial, no matter the outcome, there is going to be a huge letdown and then a lot of emptiness with no career to keep him on track.

I’m afraid we’re going to be reading sad headlines about Johnny in the near future, and it is heart-breaking to see this.

I think he already know his career is over and so his intent is to destroy hers. He has his sibling and his kids. If he loses in court but wins public opinion and Amber lose her career what does she have left?

Well, she has a baby and her youth still. But I can't imagine any man who would want to be with her after everything that's coming out.

She'll probably become a full on lesbian going forward. Maybe she'll decide that she will never again be associated with any trashy behavior again, like Angelina, and live a very isolated life.

I think she is a liar. But how big of a deal is this if she just says, oops my bad, got the brand name wrong! Is this really a smoking gun?

Then she'll have to find another brand name that sells correction makeup that's mainstream (and not the special effects makeup that comes in big bottles). At the time, and even now, not that many brands would sell a pocket size package to cover and cancel/neutralize every possible shade or bump on your face, which is necessary with bruises. Sometimes they are blue, sometimes green or red and that requires saturated well studied range of pigments.
I think they wanted to prove that she was very good with covering and making her supposed wounds invisible, which is time consuming and doesn't work with just any single concealer. It's possible and convenient if you have a pack that neutralizes all possible undertones, so they picked Milani brand.

I bet this was Amber advising her team about something she's good at (she's not!) and they trusted it (why?) instead of double checking with a pro makeup artist.

Looks like the makeup she claimed to use was not on the market until a year after her divorce.

Oof. Unforced error on an unnecessary lie.

Not a chance. Men flock to crazy. And Angelina isn’t alone.

She's dated more women than men long-term, and her male companions all seem to have been opportunistic relationships.
