question for the virology experts: if omicron turns out to be not virulent at all is it a good idea to get infected? One will get some immunity from the infection but not the sickness, right? Or is it even possible to neutralize the virulent part of its RNA to turn it into some kind of live vaccine?

My kids are in virtual right now but I find it extremely crass that you could characterize it like this. Way to make all virtual families seem like crap.

hahaha. “OAD” stands for Omicron and Delta.

NO. Don't do anything stupid until we know more about this variant. Get your booster if you haven't yet received it, since Covid vaccines are only good for 5-6 months and we are starting another Delta wave, and take all protective measures until we know more about Omicron operates. Pfizer and Moderna are designing new vaccines as we speak, they won't be ready for months, but unless Omicron proves to be mild indeed, you're better off waiting for an inactivated Omicron vaccine than taking the risk with the live virus.

It would be funny if it works that way. All the anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers will get vaccinated by breathing.

Genetically modify omicron in the lab to make a live vaccine? It can work but will never be approved by the FDA. If it ever gets approval, it would long after the pandemic is over. After all, subsequent variants may become more transmissible than omicron or the omicron-derived live vaccine.

Doesn’t look like omicron is going to spread widely in the US, which has a much higher vaccination rate than SA. It is unlikely that omicron will reach our schools. It also seems that omicron is not as bad as initially thought.

You're just a troll, but on the outside chance you're not, this is what people said for Delta.

Omicron will be the dominant variant here in 3 months. Get your booster.

It's more transmissible than Delta and infects people who had previous infections. Doesn't look more virulent for now, but just the first two characteristics I mentioned make it a problem from a hospital capacity perspective.

No one wants closures, but Hogan will be forced into restrictions if hospitals are saturated.

The rate of growth is truly staggering.

And with reinfections so high, I worry for all the kids that got Covid during Delta getting a second round right away.

Why? What if they do? Odds are extremely high they’ll be just fine a second time as well.

Just fine is an overstatement. We know that repeat infections can increase severity. We should try to avoid this.

Thanks for posting this. It could be our future for the next few months. Better get the booster right away!

No omicron death and no reinfection after omicron. So omicron could be good news.

This trope again?! You never quit; I'll give you that.

We don't have enough evidence of how the vaxxes work for omicron. The vaxxes work really for all previous variants.
