Wow, reading through some of this incredibly long thread one would think that Ludlow Taylor was the worst public school ever and people who allow there children to attend it are either crazy liberal, don't care about education, or live in PG county. Well I for one am a) not crazy liberal b) care about my child's education c) don't live in PG county but rather on 6th and F NE. For those people who are griping about the principal I wonder how many of you actually attend the school and attend the PTA meetings? I'm certain I would know who you are considering there are so few of us there. What is really amazing to me is the vitriol that is so frequently unleashed on blogs like this about LTES from people who's children don't even attend the school. Furthermore, the amount of disinformation that is spread throughout the community is startling. Those of us who have children at LTES are hoping to make it a great community school. Those of you who have had you child at LTES and have elected to leave, by all means please share with others your constructive criticisms of the school and move on. For those of you who only past judgement based on the number of children being dropped off from cars with MD tags or by counting the number of black children (your kidding yourselves if some of you say you don't do this) please shut up. Principal Cobbs is doing a good job (as evident by the most recent test scores). If she doesn't address every one of your ridiculous concerns about how rigorous a PK3, PK4, K or First grade class is please try to relax. Your hyperacute world is not the reality for teaching small children. I for one am tired of hearing all the nonsense about LTES when my child's experience was so positive. Harken back to that old expression that your mom (or dad) taught you; if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all.
Thanks,

Actually, most people are saying that LT is good for the early childhood years. I don't see anyone saying the PS and PK program needs to be more rigorous (??). It's the elementary years that are the concern.
Anonymous
Considering that it seems as though almost nobody stays beyond the PreK years, I think anyone's ability to judge the school for those grades is extremely limited. However, the persistent negativity certainly plays a role in the perception of the school.

Persistent negativity is the problem? Ridiculous, Stanton Park gentrifiers would like nothing more than to see LT serve neighborhood families in droves - many have done their damndest to stay positive about the school. Weak PR is not the issue here.

People change schools all the time - part of the DC "choice" model, right. I think the key difference is that there are a few, vocal former LT families who feel they were burned by the principal after investing heavily in the school (time, money, etc.). Those families see no hope for the school as long as the principal is there and are disappointed that they don't have a real neighborhood option. And if asked around the neighborhood about LT (or on this Board) they will definitely talk the school down. Are there opinions wrong - no, they are their opinions. The problem is that there are not more positive counter opinions.

Yikes Scott Burger. You may want to take your own last sentence to heart. Other people have different experiences. Just because it isn't yours doesn't mean they are less valid.

Maybe there should be a separate forum called "People Who Feel Personally Wronged by Principal Cobbs." This way folks would not feel compelled to turn one personal encounter into a series of uninformed bashing about the school in general.

Thanks, Scott. Totally agree. LT's test scores were second highest for a DCPS in Capitol Hill (behind Brent). What the school needs is for more parents to quit trying to "better deal" the school and to stay in and stay involved. The IB neighborhood for the school is great and the school has shown that they can back up good PS3-4 experiences with good test scores in G-3. Enough negativity about Principal Cobb.

It can't be that people should both stop trying to "better deal" the school and that they should leave the school if they are not happy with it.

It's impossible to know what the L-T test scores mean without knowing how many of them involve portfolio testing of SN children, versus traditional DC CAS scores. If you look at schools with a high percentage of SN kids (or that serve even exclusively SN kids), it is patently obvious that the portfolio tests are different.

Oh, come on kids, obviously something is working, whether you like it or not. Incidentally, I know a former Maury family who switched to Ludlow-Taylor and didn't regret it. Give it a rest.

By that measure, the single-best public school on Capitol Hill and virtually the top school in the city is St. Colletta's, which had proficiency rates in the high 90th percentiles. But hey, who am I to question the numbers?

I would find that forum both inappropriate and entertaining given some of the stories I've heard. Oh well, will never happen.
