Sidwell football article in post....what are the parents saying?

Manifesto McRant: I've had it. I am so tired of what appears to be one mean-spirited poster targeting one school and, for the most part, one team.

Who am I? I am not a Sidwell parent. I am not a Sidwell graduate. I don't have children who play football. I do have kids who play sports at other DC-area independent schools. I do have good friends who graduated from Sidwell, and a couple who teach at Sidwell. I do think it is incredibly nasty to constantly harp on the fortunes of one team of high school kids, some of whom are as young as 14, mocking their efforts when unsuccessful under the mantle of criticizing the "state of Sidwell athletics." I believe that as much fun as crazy DCUM world is, occasionally it would be good to lock a thread, but I get that that is not the policy and I respect that it's a policy that has worked well for this very successful site.

So, I am going to start posting results of other Sidwell sports teams in this thread, and lots of them. And I'm going to bump other threads up when the Sidwell Football Stalker posts their usual mean-spirited responses.

Sorry, but I'm just tired of reading this stuff for a year.

I am not Manifesto McRant, but I totally agree with his/her attitude and annoyance. Every time I see this thread near the top of page 1, I will post the most recent successes of the various Sidwell teams. New regional and national rankings come out on Tuesdays, so look for updates tomorrow. I predict Sidwell girls soccer will crack the top 30 in the nation, and Sidwell boys soccer will be top 4 in the DMV region.

But their football team isn't Landon, so all is wrong in the world.

None of this has anything to do with Landon. Quit trying to confuse the issue.

After defeating Bullis, then ranked in the top 10 in the Washington Post, the Sidwell Field Hockey team defeats Madeira on Homecoming.

The interesting thing about the field hockey team is that not so long ago, the team was in the basement in league standings -- for several seasons, if I'm remembering correctly. Even so, there was great spirit among the girls and a lot of support from the student body. In fact, I remember hearing about a pep rally where the team got a standing ovation for having scored a single goal -- their first in a long losing streak. This just goes to show that while some schools may be perrenial powerhouses in a particular sport, fortunes can change over time. So, there may be light at the end of the tunnel after all for Sidwell football!

But Sidwell will never compete with Prep or Landon, so why bother?

In field hockey? Just how strong are the Prep and Landon field hockey teams this year? Is StA also competing?

If you're going to keep trying to stir the pot on this stupid thread, at lease post something that makes sense!

I am assuming the Landon/Prep comments are actually meant as ironic commentary on the silliness of a thread bashing one of the best academic schools in the region over football. Perhaps I am wrong, but here's hoping for the best.

13:13 here.

Yes, meant to be ironic.

13:37 here. Apologies. I must be low on irony today. I'll watch some Seinfeld reruns later to catch up.

Speaking of iron and irony doesn't this thread and number of hits speak to the area D.C. private school community's obsession and idolatry of sports in America? Athletics forms the foundation of these schools -- not academic accomplishment. Sadly, athletics drives the fundraising and endowment not intellectual and academic pursuits. Even more sad, for this region and clientele, the school endowments are shamefully paltry.

MIT sucks as a school because its football team can't beat LSU.

Where is MIT? I haven't heard of this in the D.C. area?

It's the new private Middle School Institute of Technology to boost the lagging performance of area private school pupils in math and science. A similar private high school is in the works. Finally the independent schools will have a rival for the heavy weight academic publics like TJ, RM and Blair magnet. We shall finally have something to cheer about during the school week.
