2023 Girls Recruiting

We're just waiting and it's getting a little infuriating. We were told they'd get a call no matter what and nothing. The longer it goes I can only assume kid didn't pass the pre-read, but it's just so frustrating. I am so sick of this recruiting roller coaster.

The Ivy League school coaches have a certain number of spots they can fill, and the kids just need to get the minimum required. The minimum may be very respectable, but still practically guarantee a spot if they player has that and the coach wants them. For the NESCAC schools, the coach will support players, but they are still put through the admissions process, and the admissions office will say whether the person is in the field of students who would be accepted to the school. Of course, it is a little less stringent than normal applicants, but pretty close. So, you have to have amazing academic credentials to get a spot. (For example, most athletes accepted to Williams will have a 34 or higher on the ACT. Not all, but most.)

And even at the long-standing test optional schools (not just because of covid), athletic recruits still have to have SAT/ACT scores for their pre-read. They might be advised not to submit them when the actual application goes in (my DC was told not to submit their 32 on the ACT) because it would bring down the average.

It is a roller coaster and I'm sorry you are feeling down right now. Try not to jump to conclusions. If it helps at all, there were a significant number of players on my DC's team that didn't get calls on July 1. Don't despair. A ton happens in the first few weeks of July.

Thanks! It's just so disappointing because she was told she was the top recruit and couldn't wait to call her on the 1st (as recently as a few days ago), but we knew the pre--read may be a problem, so just assuming it was. Still no word and there are lots of tears here.

Don’t worry my son didn’t hear until July 7th. It isn’t a big deal. It is Fourth of July weekend and sometimes the pre reads don’t happen until after July 1st at some schools. Who knows? But your recruiting director if any good or your high school coach will know what is going on. Some of the best of the best high school coaches know what is going on your high school coach should know easily by a text.

From conversations this weekend, there seems to be more more academic scrutiny for these players than top academic DI schools, where many players are being allowed to go test optional as part of the 2023 class.

Which schools? Every high academic school requires tests for its 24s. (Even some that are test optional for other students. )

Thanks for the encouragement. Unfortunately, her HS coach is a joke and has done nothing. The college coach has been in touch with her constantly since November. The last few weeks with repeated texts and emails reminding her how much they want her and that's she's #1 and I don't doubt she is. I just wish if the pre-read got delayed that she would have at least texted her today to let her know. As it is, we both think she didn't get past the pre-read and the coach feels too badly to let her know. She was very clear she would call her today. It's just a bit jarring. She has a couple other offers, but is not remotely interested as she was in this one. Anyway, thanks again!

Certain schools are not ahead of the game and often wait until July 6 or 7th don’t frets.

If she has other offers, then she should just text or email the coach she has had a good connection with - Was sorry not to hear from you yet today, I am considering accepting one of these other offers, and I wanted to know where I stand with your school.
Better than waiting - that’s torture.

Don’t take that advice last thing you want to be like is aggressive that is a red flag. Talk to your coach and recruiting director they should know if they are not honest than that is a major major red flag for the program. College coaches have a lack of respect for certain people in this community and speak volumes about the aggressive nature of one in particular.

Disagree. Don’t have to feel aggressive at all. Just open and honest. If you do it right, it’s no problem. Especially if you are in a situation with a recruiting director who is not helpful.

Disagree. I would wait til 7/5 and then ask where I am on their recruiting chart. If you can’t get a straight answer, drop the school from consideration.

Thanks for all this advice. I just can't believe the coach would have said, repeatedly, you are our number one recruit, if they didn't mean it. I know where she is on the chart and I believe she really is at the top. I am pretty sure she didn't pass the pre-read and coach just doesn't want to tell her. I just wish she would have so she could get it over with and move on with her life. It probably means dropping the sport. She has one other offer from a decent school, but not one she would go to without the sport. She just didn't cast her net that wide. Moved very far down the road with two D1s, lost her first choice last fall becauser of freshman year grades, and the second one, the final spot came down to her and one other player and she lost. It's just been so frustrating and such a roller coaster. But she loves this NESCAC, was told she was THE one, so she wasn't that worried, except for the grades. Looks like this one is a no, too, though and she is devastated. We are thinking about a PG year and reaching back out to coaches who were obviously so interested in her to see if another year of academics would help. Thanks again!
