MASTER Cancel Travel b/c of COVID-19 Questions Thread

I wouldn’t cruise at this point. Why take the risk of being stuck on board for weeks? Yikes.

As for other travel, it’s recommended to cease non essential travel not bc of danger to yourself but to avoid spreading. The more we can cut down on the movement of people the more we can try and slow this thing and buy some time.

We haven’t cancelled, but happy they’ve loosened the cancellation policy. We may not, for a specific reason, decide to go and wash our hands a lot. Every family needs to do what’s best for them unless the government warns against it.

Good luck. Safe travels and hope you can come home safe

Thank you. It will be my DH’s last chance to go on a family vacation. We are considering all possibilities.

The economic impact of not rebelling due to fear will lead to tons of unemoyment, families losing their homes, suicides, kids going hungry. There is a large segment of working poor who work in the travel, hospitality, retail and service industries who will be severely negatively impacted by everyone staying home.

Unless there is an actual risk, we will continue to travel. We have family currently travelling internationally right now and more leaving next week.

I get it, but I honestly don't care deeply enough to risk my or my family's health over it even if that risk is 0.1%. And while you're saying you won't go places with current outbreaks -- IMO anyplace with cases has an outbreak right now; so why would I go to Fla. -- just because of someone else's potential unemployment, loss of home, kids hungry, or suicide? I'm sympathetic to how economic slow downs spiral when people stop spending; it happened in 08 and because I was working in a counter cyclical industry in NYC and secure in my job, I was very conscious of it and made sure to keep ordering out, tipped servers and cabbies more than usual, kept shopping etc to keep money circulating. Yet that was ONLY money. This would mean helping others out with potential risk to my health, and sorry -- no that isn't going to happen.

West Palm Beach this Wed-Sat. Staying in a hotel not a house. Direct flight from DCA. Plans include wandering palm beach island, walking the beach, and eating out bc Ubering between places bc parking is a hassle. Age 39, heart valve condition but otherwise fine.

There is some evidence that people with heart conditions are more likely to be hospitalized for COVID-19: https://www.heart.org/en/news/2020/02/27/what-heart-patients-should-know-about-coronavirus

There is some very preliminary evidence that, even in those who recover, it may also cause heart damage.

So, no, in your shoes I’d very regretfully skip this wedding.

But they NEEEED to GOOOOO.

Your point is correct and clear. But for most people, it’s blame everyone else in government and then go do what you want to do.

The only thing I HAVE to do is pick up my kid for spring college break. I will drive, go to quiet, out of the way rest stops, and hope like heck they kill the rest of the semester.

My guess is my husband in tech ends up working from home. At that point, I go stay with my sister near my kid until they kill the semester so I can get there fast. I’m betting the college closes early.

“Kill the semester?” So all the work the students have put in since January should be for naught?

I mean if they feed me and pay my salary and I am not in a shithole I am totally ok with it.

....

They're not going to pay you. That's between you and your job which I'm pretty sure will require you (and most people) to take unpaid leave. That's what happened to the corona ship tourists who weren't retired.

Can’t I take FMLA though or some other medical leave?

If you are sick, sure. But most people aren't going to be that sick. I could simply work from home for the 2 weeks, because I have a nice employer and a job where I could still get stuff done.

And FMLA isn’t paid leave. You can use sick leave along with it to get paid, but you don’t get extra pay because of it.

I just talked to our doctor who said Europe is looking concerning

You could wait and see, but be prepared to cancel

Hell no.

Why not? Is it really going to be any worse there than here at that point.

I’m the pp going to Vienna and Budapest. I work at a hospital and multiple MD’s have said to go and not worry about it. They encourage basic precautions that the CDC recommends. I’m following cdc recs of course but so far seems very low risk for me! We’ll see by the end of March. It feels reassuring that the many MD’s at my hospital are NOT super concerned about the younger, healthy adults and children. I’m excited to go, been planning it a long time.

Yes, go.
Who's here telling everyone to not go anywhere?
I have a few trips planned for March and April. So far not canceling but watching closely how the situation develops. According to the "commentators" here on this thread, every travel should be canceled...

Same. Ridiculous

I don't think every bit of travel should be cancelled. I think European vacations and travel to COVID-19 hotspots or on cruises should. No need to get on a plane, catch your virus, whine at the U.S. govt you're stranded overseas, then come back and potentially spread it to someone else.

And I sincerely hope the Diamond Princess passengers who are now free and meeting with every reporter they can are not in anyway contagious as well because they could be causing a Texas outbreak and not care.

The conference I was scheduled to attend in April (spring break week) in NC was just canceled. Glad the decision was made for me!

None of you HAVE to travel. So don’t.

The Italian equivalent to Nancy Pelosi just tested positive. And you still want to go on those trips to France and Italy and Germany?
