We really need to say, “We have to be very, very careful to make sure that when we set out these opportunities, or inspire these dreams and ambitions, that we’re helping people do whatever they can to achieve their goal, but not in a way that if they fail, they are left with nothing.”

It is a false dichotomy to imply excellence on the field absolutely has to come at the expense of excellence in another area of life.

Relax. The point is not about GDA but more about how long actual development cycles really are. Folks are bashing DA for not producing results on the men’s side.

ECNL has been around for nearly as long as Boys DA has and ECNL has yet to really put its stamp on a far less competitive women’s international game. While our women’s team did win the last World Cup ECNL has had zero impact.

What does this mean? Nothing more than instant results are silly when things like DA are developed. These are longer term investments that do not yield immediate results. ECNL and DA have not really proven to be developmental but they have proven to make scouting easier for colleges.

I guess college coaches are just dumb as are all the ECNL and DA coaches, players, and parents. Yep, you’re right oh sage of soccer wisdom. Can you tell us who you are, who you coach, and your personal success rate of “developing” players. Yeah, that’s what I thought. For the record:

I posted everything that I did for the ONE (maybe two) poster who came onto a ECNL thread to regurgitate DA talking points. I felt that the poster, while purposely being a PITA, was talking from a position of ignorance and or inexperience.

The poster probabley feels that he/she is doing US Soccers bidding by being a digital marketer on a talk forums in an effort to persuade talent to move toward DA or else suffer doom and gloom. What the poster wants is area talent consolidation so he/she can say that his/her daughter plays in the best league.

What the poster doesnt understand is that it's not going to happen. Not because I said so...because the national trend is showing it. In fact, more top quality clubs are defecting vs joining

What US Soccer should have done is supported the ECNL while using their money to establish a second to none scouting network with second to none scouts. They should identify talent very early on, make them sign contracts, and pay for their development. Also establish regional centers run by US Soccer. True brick and mortar training centers. True academies.

Real development doesnt come via the league. The league is there to test the development and ability of players to compete at the next level.

DA players should be of a high enough quality to turn pro and develop further there in a professional environment not in a collegiate environment.

Not at all. ECNL has brainwashed people into believing that College Soccer is the highest level and that if your kid gets there then they are themselves the highest of quality.

When European players come to play in College here it is an admission that they are not in fact good enough players in Europe and that they will never Ben pros.

Here, we believe College is the pinnacle because football and basketball players go to college before pro.

Playing in college is not easy and it is not easy to make a college roster. But when it is a league/clubs stated mission of developing players to get scouted in a relative sense internationally is a pretty self fulfilling and low bar.

With college being the end goal and the measure of success for clubs and the marketing of the league clubs generally don’t take a longer view of players and instead tend to look more at the quick return on investment in players. They select and promote players they see as succeeding at collegiate level. A level that in an of itself is merely a short 4 year investment at the max.

So clubs are pushing athletes that a college program can perhaps get two seasons of playing time out of.

We will no longer remain a soccer power on the women’s side until we begin to even argue the benefits of playing college soccer in the same manor as we do now about HS soccer. The college game has proven already to stifle our men’s program and with European Pro clubs growing the women’s game and using the same approach as the men’s academies we will lose ground and never catch back up.

None of this means that I believe that my kid is going pro, but it illustrates how low a bar this pissing match is setting. Like you, I’ll choose the best path possible for college because frankly that is the only path any of us have regardless of our kids talent or potential.
