New Name for JEB Stuart HS - 9/16 Community Vote

Anonymous
It will come from a $2.75 billion budget. If we can afford AAP, TJ, and freshman and JV lacrosse, we can afford to undo decades of institutional racism crammed down the throats of minority kids.

Exactly.

So, that is all it takes to undo years of institutional racism? Good. We can now get rid of affirmative action simply by changing the name of a school. Done.

You're deliberately obtuse and obviously racist, but it's a step in the right direction.

No. Not obtuse at all. Also, not racist.

I am a realist. To make a statement that changing the name will erase decades of institutional racism is foolish. One million dollars is a lot to spend on something that will make no difference in the lives of the students. Picking a name like "Justice" is adding insult to injury. Justice is a good thing--but, it does not sound like a good name for a high school. Especially, in the current climate: Just-ICE; etc. It is also the name of a juvie high school. Poor choice.

You are a racist hiding behind a mask of "realism." We can all see that spending money on poor kids in any form drives you crazy.

And go complain about Liberty MS and Freedom HS if you can't handle Justice.

Actually, I strongly support more money to the poor kids. You would be shocked if you knew my background and experience--since you seem to label anyone who disagrees with spending a million dollars on a name change as racist.

Because of my experience, I realize that a million dollars could be far better spent to help the minority kids and understand that it will not make a difference in their lives.

As for "Freedom" and "Liberty", if you don't understand the difference in going to Freedom High School or Justice High School, then I cannot help you. Maybe there is a high school named Freedom that addresses juvenile delinquency, but I don't know of one. Did you participate in high school activities? Do you remember that at all?

I'm still trying to picture the Justice High School band and football team. You don't get that?

Your experience is no more relevant than that of the students and families who overcame the arrogance and hatred of the "keepers" and successfully fought for change.

If you are too cognitively impaired to imagine the Justice HS band and teams, just pick up a yearbook in two years.

And, this is the problem. You think all the "keepers" are haters. You are wrong. Congratulations on your win. If you think that is a good use of $1million dollars when there are kids in need, then good on you.

I look forward to seeing a great improvement in minority test scores and future employment as a result of this name change. Somehow, I don't think this is going to improve anyone's life.

It's improved people's lives already by demonstrating that old white farts don't always get to hijack the debate and stand in the way of progress. Black people were ignored and abused at that school far too long.

Wow. Glad to know that a name change will make a difference. How were the black people ignored and abused? Please give specifics.

Bruce Cohen and Julianne Moore make me sick. They are turning out to be just the cheap-ass hypocrites we suspected they would be. Meanwhile teachers and kids will end up short-changed due to their whining.

$15,000? That's it?

This thread now has become just people regurgitating the dollar figures collected so far. Surprised Jeff hasn't shut this thread down yet. Seems like it's time.
