What about Monday?

I would hope that someone in McPS is working to submit a virtual learning plan to the state of Maryland as they should have months ago, knowing they only built in one snow day for the school calendar.

Other Maryland school districts have them. MCPS seems to prefer the uncertainty and extra days off.

The virtual learning plan is not to do it. That is the proper plan.

Seriously, why? If the roads and sidewalks are clear, why should we close?

Because she doesn't want to work.

Instead we add days to the end of the year that most skip or that turn into movie days. I'd rather have the semblance of learning than none at all...

I think it’s pretty dangerous. Three lane roads are now two lane roads. Not much movement to turn for the busses. Sidewalks are not clear.

While that's true, I don't understand why you think that makes things "pretty dangerous."

To me, "dangerous" implies a significant risk of non-trivial injuries or death. That's not the situation. The conditions make things inconvenient and, at times, uncomfortable. They're not particularly dangerous.

Because it’s not snow, it’s ice and the temperature is not budging so a two hour delay does not do much to help melt it. There are mounds of ice and no sidewalk and lanes are minimum. Where do you advise children walk? Buses that are driving on the one lane road will not be able to see children walking on the same one lane road. Look at the child that just got killed by the bus with no ice. Extend the school year and make sure the children are safe. In addition, as a teacher myself, they put a county poll out to see if we will be coming in. No point in having the kids come in if we the teachers choose to use our leave instead.

You're just going to have to accept that conditions will not change and schools will open this week. If you believe your child is in danger waiting for the bus, please contact local city or county authorities so they can address the snowbank situation at your bus stop (MCPS is only responsible for school properties)... or go and shovel it out yourself.

I don’t understand this logic of “It won’t get better so do nothing and force an opening.” They need to do something or make some accommodations to kids walking to school.

Then start coming up with solutions!

The solutions are baked in -- Open. Leverage crossing guards to have walking school buses for kids who need to navigate around the piles of snow. Centralize bus stops on streets that are too narrow for the buses. This should all be straightforward.

I think Dr. Taylor has said that MCPS is planning to open in 2030, possibly closer to 2040.

Please Thomas Taylor get off of this site and do your work.

Not Taylor. For one, I don't support gutting HS programs.

Anyone else reloading the website? I want them to tell us already so I can plan if I need to make arrangements in the morning for late start or arrange a playdate if there's no school....

Yes, that's why we should do make-up days instead of virtual no-learning days.

I like this but have a question. If we were to change bus stops today/tonight, how can we guarantee everyone gets the communication? My school routinely has kids show up at normal time when we have 2 hour delays because a lot of parents don't check e-mails and texts.

Again, I like the idea though.

This time Montgomery had it worse than most all the surrounding counties. Plus, Howard is much smaller. Can't compare the two.

Except MCPS often takes cues from its surrounding districts. Most schools are opening. MCPS should too

MCPS should ignore that it has more schools and our county has more roads than HCPS so that it doesn’t get FOMO?

Don't let Howard peer pressure you, Montgomery. Just say NO.

Yep, open on time instead of delay

No, close all day. Open Tues with a delay. Wed will be closed with more snow..

They’re predicting no more than 1-2 inches on Wednesday. They shouldn’t close for that at this point.

Oh yes they should close for that. That is on top of this icebergs

I honestly can't tell if you're being serious or if you're mocking the snow fearmongers.

A little of both at this point. If the cleaning was adequate, definitely open with a delay. But it's not there. Yet. And probably won't get there by 4pm or whatever time they plan to announce.

Have you bothered to leave your house? I don't understand how anyone could claim these conditions warrant closing schools. People have been out and about since Tuesday.

Because, gasp, little kids might have to walk on ice! Or may have to walk in the street to get around the snowcrete mountains. Never mind the fact there are crossing guards at most of the major crosswalks where this is an issue.

Have you ever helped the guards on a regular day? Yeah didn't think so. You want the mitigate traffic and yield to vehicles honking on a one lane road or help little Larla over the snow? Geez.

Huh? I want kids to get to school. There are people hired to do just that if the kids are walking.

Hired to get kids to school? So crossing guard should stop traffic and help Larlo cross over the bank at same time? Let's see how that happens. Are there two guards at each intersection?

Exactly. There's no great mystery here.
