Mary Cheh has turned Cleveland Park/Cleveland Park North into her personal political asset

PP with the duplex in CP. I know, it just seems like a way to force me to spend extra money on the highest end brands simply because my house is old. I assure you it is not architecturally interesting in the least and in fact has vinyl siding and looks like a box. It’s simply old in a historic district and by virtue of that fact is a “contributing asset.” Inside is lovely with original hardwood floors, original large crown molding and ceiling medallions, original curved staircase railing, floor to ceiling built ins, etc. But the outside is nothing to look at and I was shocked when I toured it, excepting the inside to be as cookie cutter dull as the outside.

It isn't spending "extra money" - the owner who installed the vinyl windows cheaped out and left you holding the bag.

Cheh admits the Hearst project has been "failure after failure" and says she has no idea when it will be finished.

Because she is the one who hired the contractor and runs the bureaucracy?

Yes, it is the perfect spot for a pool. She listened to her constituents who wanted an outdoor pool in the Ward. She got the money for it. At that point, her job was supposed to be done. DGS and the corresponding agencies - DPR and the Mayor's office are where the failure has occurred. Let's hold them accountable.

It's a major construction project in her ward, one that she pushed for. To finally take notice of the project's well-publicized problems nearly two years after construction began isn't exactly a profile in leadership.

A side note, but this , from her letter, enrages me. I know people with 20+ bites. Is Covid the universal excuse forever more?:

"
Oak Mites

I reached out two weeks ago to DC Health to see whether it had any guidance about oak mites. DC Health said it was fully engaged with COVID, and that, in any event, the mites are not a public health crisis because mites are not a vector (i.e. they don’t carry disease). The director referred the issue to the Department of Energy and the Environment, and that department sent me the following draft statement. Although only a draft, I thought it might be helpful for residents to see it now:"

She didn't "just take notice" - she is expressing the same displeasure we all share. It isn't her job to oversee the construction.

She took her sweet-ass time to notice a massively flawed project in her ward. There are literally zero other similarly sized projects in ward 3.

But keep excusing her inattention.

She has answered every email and phone call I personally made to her and her staff on this. She has been aware of the issues from the outset. There has been no "inattention."

Just incompetence on the part of DGS.

DC is frustrating city as the buck stops nowhere it seems. We just accept that. No pool two years running and poop on the sidewalks because no govt. Agency wishes to pick it up, and rats running riot because none can get a bead on that. Not to mention school reopening chaos, shootings of bystanders, rampant car theft and all the rest. Can't have nice things.

In this case, the buck should be stopping with DGS and the Mayor. They are the ones responsible for procuring the contractors and providing day to day management for the construction and maintenance.

I totally agree, but by inviting a 'bridge to nowhere/big dig' project into the heart of our community, WE, our ANC and ultimately Mary Cheh need to apply to pressure to them. She has been in office long enough to know how these things go, every time.

She pushed for this project. She owns it. I wish she would move on to some other neighborhood to mismanage

Do you honestly think she has been sitting on her thumbs for the last 2 years on this? Seriously, how many DGS walk throughs and meetings have YOU attended on sight with Dee Smith from her office? I can count at least 10 personally.

Oh come on. Mary Cheh is 100 percent on the hook for this. She pushed it through, ran over the opposition - including those who raised repeated warnings about water related problems - and now it's everyone else's fault. It's the mayor's fault? It's DGS"
MARY CHEH OWNS THIS TWO YEAR DEBACLE.
