The hyperbole and villianization is out of control here.  Nobody wants to "destroy the W schools."  And if there are some who dislike the perceived privilege of those communities, they don't care enough to do "everything in their power" to "nuke" it.  It was MCPS that put this option on the table, not an imaginary band of angry anti-W haters.

I take no issue with anybody arguing against Option H and making arguments for why another option is better.  It is important civic engagement.

But you can do that without creating a war mentality and casting everybody who does not share your opinion as motivated by some type of vengeance.

It’s not victim mentality when you actually ARE a victim. I guess Wootton kids don’t belong to their parents anymore.  The kids who go to Wootton don’t want to go to Crown, but their opinions don’t seem to matter either.

You thinking that MCPS should do what a group of UMC parents want is entitlement.   You can share your opinion, just as others can share theirs.  But, ultimately, MCPS should choose the option that makes the most sense.

Did you not hear that MoCo has a huge budget crisis in the coming years?  Do you realize that there are 22 schools on the CIP?   There's a brand new school a couple of miles away from Wootton.  No other school on the CIP has a brand new school near it.[/quote]

But Wootton families don’t want Crown. Feel free to give it to one of the other high schools that needs it more. Just remediate a few issues at Wootton. The millions that it will cost to move Wootton and rebrand Crown as Wootton can be used for this purpose.

With that problem solved, why do you really want to move Wootton to Crown?  I just drove by Crown and there are a bunch of signs at new developments and renovated apartment complexes advertising that Crown is the new Wootton. How much more can they charge home buyers and renters by trading on the Wootton reputation as the #3 high school in the state and #191 in the country?

Of course, the tyrrany of the majority was among the reasons the Founding Fathers were skeptical of pure democracy.  Certainly, the relative impacts should be considered.

In the end, however, the decision-making criteria should boil down to providing individuals across the system with reasonably similar overall educational experiences, from courses available to facility conditions to extracurriculars to transportation and beyond, though taken as a whole, as making all, or even any, of these [i]exactly equal[/i] for everyone would be hugely inefficient, if not impossible.  The closer they can get to a point where people, generally, wouldn't care to which MCPS school their children would be zoned, the more they would know that they are heading in the right direction.

The only people who don’t care what school their kids are zoned for are people who don’t care about their kid’s education/very specific other reasons. This isn’t a moco thing. Everywhere in the country people are very careful where they settle in terms of schools. Literally everyone I personally know has never rented or purchased a property without considering the schools. There is not a place in this country where people aren’t considering where a property is in regards to schools-this is not an attainable goal. The only people who don’t care about it are:
1. those that simply don’t have a choice where they live.
2. Those who do not care at all about their kid’s education. 
3. Those who don’t know any better themselves so don’t think there is a difference.
4. Those coming from areas so unbelievably bad that literally anything is a huge upgrade. [/quote]
