Welcome to democracy where making your voice heard still matters. You’d rather live in an autocracy? |
I can not be more disappointed by this board and the whole process. What incredible waste of money, time, and good will from parents and community members. And yet, tonight they will all pat themselves on the back for for a job well done. They will say what a great job to they did tackling something that has not been tackled in 40 years. Everyone will forget by 27, and the same clown show will be back for round two. |
|
It’s a shit show. If they aren’t going to step up to the plate and do some things that require actual courage and integrity, they should just fix Coates and leave everything else alone.
The incompetence and bowing to the wealthy is illustrated by their moving some of Marshall’s most affluent areas to wealthier Madison based on materially flawed (and since updated) data about Kilmer’s capacity and making an existing attendance island even worse in the process. The notion that they’ll pay themselves on the back tonight is truly revolting. |
Actual courage and integrity = only making necessary boundary changes, like Coates. Full stop. |
And a year too late. Actually, two years later than it should have been done. |
I think it’s reasonable to admit they lack actual courage and integrity and therefore they should amend Policy 8130 to provide that redistricting should only occur when a school is severely overcrowded, accurately measured. It is not courageous to leave a policy in place that says decisions will be based on criteria that are then largely ignored or inconsistently applied. |
| Courage is standing up for our community against a school board who would engage in this filth to the detriment of thousands of FCPS students’ mental health. |
Right. Support from people who weren’t affected. Many LBSS families supported the move. It’s easy to support moving someone when it’s not your household affected. |
|
The split feeder supporters here just want things to stay the same because they are currently zoned to the "better" school after the split. That's why they're being so vocal about it and trying to downplay the importance of fixing the split feeders.
Most parents would love for our kids to go to school in real pyramids where they don't lose half their friends at the transition to middle or high school. It's only the ones afraid of where they'd end up that are speaking up to keep the split feeders. |
There were families whose kids would be rezoned who supported it privately, some because regular families did not have the option of choosing between Irving or LB. Only AAP families have that option. The other kids who are not AAP in that school had zero choice to attend LB with all their friends, and had to start all over at Irving. Once they were there, they preferred staying, but they are not happy about tge split feeder and would have preferred map 4 from Sangster. If you are passionately and publicly advocating to keep the Sangster (or any) split feeder, people who want the Sangster (or any) split feeder fixed will not feel comfortable expressing to you their private preference for the elimination of the split feeder. They don't want the public vitriol against them from their neighbors that is so publicly being projected towards FCPS by groups like your group. If you really believe that all Sangster split feeder parents with kids zoned for Irving support your fight against rezoning to LB, with the same veracity as you, you might be sorely mistaken. There are definitely families with Sangster kids zoned for Irving who want the split feeder ended, as well as plenty of people who are neutral because both LB and Irving/WSHS are great and equal school options. I am very much against rezoning WSHS, but honest and objective enough to realize that there are plenty of WSHS families that supported the solutions from Map 4, including families in the Sangster split feeder area, and that Map 4 presented some good long term solutions for WSHS by miving out the island and split feeder to LB, that perhaps should have been implemented in spite of push back, to create a long term solution and stability for WSHS that moved students to an equally ranked neighborhood high school. |
Such arrogance. Most people are fine with the existing splits. That came out when FCPS hired a consultant years ago - eliminating split feeders was a very low priority - and it came out during the current boundary study, where parents largely preferred stability over boundary changes. And, yes, there were some exceptions like Wolftrap, but there were also many situations where people preferred their current assignments, including to "lesser" schools in a split feeder. This School Board will never eliminate a split feeder just to eliminate a split feeder. It will only do so when they sense it's politically advantageous. As a result, any purported commitment to eliminating split feeders will only end up with a subset of split feeders addressed, and in ways that tend to magnify existing disparities between or among schools. |
Absolute yes to this. |
| Can anyone explain the new rule that kids can't pupil place for languages? Is that at all schools now? |
That is not a new rule. The document online is from July 2018 Is FCPS is finally starting to enforce the language transfer restrictions? |
Residency is supposed to be verified for all student tranfer requests per FCPS policy. There are several important transfer requirements in addition to yearly residency verification, which are not being followed by FCPS: "Regulation 2230.13 Page 7 A. Conditions of Transfer and Transfer Revocations Approvals for all student transfers are discretionary and subject to review and approval by FCPS. Students must maintain appropriate behavior, attend school regularly, and demonstrate academic progress. In addition, the reason for the transfer must continue to exist. If the student fails to maintain the aforementioned conditions of the transfer or for those students who violate school rules, including Student Rights and Responsibilities https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/policies-regulations-andnotices/student-rights-and-responsibilities, the principal may revoke approval. In such an event, the principal will then notify the parent, the base school principal, region assistant superintendent, and the Office of Student Registration and the student will be returned to his or her base school unless student disciplinary proceedings result in a different assignment or sanction. B. One-Year Limitation Student transfer requests, if approved, are for one school year only and must be applied for and renewed annually. The school in which the student is enrolled has the responsibility for verifying Fairfax County residency status each year the request is resubmitted. |
