FCPS comprehensive boundary review

Greenbrier East going to Oakton makes no sense. Waples Mill is closer

Thoughts?

Moving Waples Mill would cut the Oakton boundary in half. There would be a giant island to the west where the Crossfield and Navy families live. That would make no sense and be directly opposed to their stated goals of eliminating islands and reducing commute times. Why pay for busses to drive through the Waples Mill area to get the Crossfield/Navy kids and not the Waples kids at the same time?

You think they are moving all of Coates into Herndon and driving up the FARMS rate there further? Would be very surprised if Robyn Lady signs off on that.

Also, Oakton just finished an expansion. There is no driving capacity need to move Waples Mill out of Oakton. Moving Waples Mill to Fairfax HS like the supposed "leaked maps" poster said would be purely a move to bus Oakton kids into Fairfax City to reduce the FARMS at Fairfax HS, while violating all 3 other of their listed goals. That's actually the main reason I think that poster was a troll. That particular move makes no sense whatsoever.

This post tells me you don't know how to read the room. They are unlikely to move the poorest part of Westfield to Herndon, and they would be more likely to move kids out of than into Woodson given the projected overcrowding.

Robyn Lady only cares about her own property values. She’ll be disappointed by the results of her complicity.

P.S. meaning it won’t positively impact her property values. (Don’t want that to be misconstrued as a veiled threat).

Waples families are furious with the thought of moving to Fairfax.

It depends on how ES boundaries shift. Waples Mill may shed some neighborhoods off Vale Rd to Navy and Crossfield and in turn pick up the townhouses currently zoned to Fairfax Villa. That would unite all of Fairfax.

To unite Oakton, the Flint Hill ES attendance island would have to shift to Oakton HS.

The rumor of this move doesn’t make sense to me, especially since capacity is stable at Fairfax and Oakton, and Centreville would likely pick up Willow Springs, freeing up space at Fairfax to take Fairfax Villa off over capacity Woodson’s hands.

The only way that they can make these moves without significant backlash is by pretending that all schools in the county are equally good and that parents are indifferent when choosing between them. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

1) we need a catchier domain URL like FCPSboundarychanges.com. Should be a splash page of the elevator pitch talking points regarding unethical/questionable things during this process.

2) we need volunteers to hold up signs at major intersections advertising that URL and "You're kids school boundary is changing!"

I think it could double, triple the eyes on this now and pressure on the SB this spring once new boundaries are proposed

You do realize a lot families will be thrilled about the bolded. Do not assume all parents are on your side. You might just wake up a sleeping giant with your banners.

Yeah, you don't know many parents with school aged kids if you think that.

I would think parents of older kids would be more enraged. Elementary kids usually have a much easier time making new friends. I see it all the time at the private school where I teach. Now,
Now, if the kid is a jerk, they won’t be making friends, period!

Sorry, but you are absolutely clueless if you think there is some "sleeping giant" of FCPS who want rezoning.

NO parents of school aged kids want this rezoning.

This is nonsense. While I doubt that most people want rezoning, some people absolutely do. I remember sitting on the sidelines with a fellow team parent who cheerfully said, "I hear they're going to change the boundaries." We are Langly pyramid, and she is Herndon pyramid. She was happy at the prospect that some GF kids would be coming to Herndon.

I never heard her complain about HHS, but I suppose she wanted the new boundaries for reasons that have been expressed in the past by Herndon High parents on this board. I doubt she was writing emails to Gatehouse encouraging the change but she was absolutely happy about the possibility.

I'm sure there are other parents in other pyramids who would welcome a change of school or to have new streets added to their current zone. Maybe they want AP instead of IB, maybe a change would mean their kid stays with a best friend instead of splitting off to different high schools when they get older, maybe with traffic patterns and a new job a different school would be more convenient to get to for sports and events.

Likely the people who are REALLY against new boundaries are more numerous and more passionate than those who would be merely happy with new boundaries, and that's something any board member who wants to continue a career in FC politics would be wise to consider.

This is spot on. I’ve heard Langley parents who live in McLean saying they would have no problem if some of Tysons was assigned to Langley and some of Great Falls was reassigned from Langley to Herndon.

As you point out, those who are unhappy with the proposed boundary changes are going to be far more vocal and organized in their opposition than those who are indifferent or supportive.

Do you hear yourself? This example and the Herndon families that want great falls families to move want to move other peoples kids. Not their own. The Herndon parents want GF families moved in. To move other people’s kids like pawns is awful. And the McLean parents moving great falls kids. Would they be as happy if they were moved to falls church? No. No one wants to move unless you’re moving up in schools. And even then some people don’t want to move.

To clarify, these Langley parents weren’t in favor of moving Great Falls kids to Herndon so much as volunteering that they understood why it might happen and not opposed.

They won’t get moved to Falls Church. Only part of McLean, not Langley, realistically might get moved there.

I think not caring about changes that don’t directly affect you is different than “for boundary changes”. It’s like saying I’m all for it as long as it’s your kid and not mine

Agree, that doesn't make sense. That would be a lot of shifting and splitting of neighborhoods just to get back to the current state of not creating a new attendance island, and all for nothing since Oakton has capacity and has no reason to need to shed Waples Mill. All of those homes are Oakton addresses. It makes no sense to bus them into Fairfax City for school. If anything, the Flint Hill island should shift to the newly expanded Crossfield (construction just finishing) and also go to Oakton to eliminate that island. That would create more space where it's actually needed closer to Vienna and Tysons where the population growth is.

Fairfax Villa used to got to Fairfax, it changed around 2011 to 2013 I believe. I had a friend in the Waples Mill zone who told me that when they bought they went to Fairfax, probably 15 to 20 years ago.

The Fairfax Villa move to Woodson was approved in 2013 and took effect in the fall of 2014.

Woodson is overcrowded as hell. They definitely need to pick up relief from somewhere. Why would they take from Oakton when Woodson is the overcrowded one? Is that why the Mantua parents are so active in all this? (sorry, 400 pages is too much to keep up on). They don't want to be the ones moved from Woodson to Fairfax HS. Mantua / Fairfax Villa cage match - GO!

The Mantua concern has always been that they will get moved to Falls Church HS. They are bordered by Fairhill and Camelot, both FCHS feeders.

So much for the fake concerns of one of Mantua's most vocal parents about equity and efficiency. Just one more self-interested hypocrite jockeying for her own neighborhood.
