FCPS comprehensive boundary review

Some old lady running as an R shows up at my door rambling about transexuals and banning books...that's such a turn off. I want more books in school, not fewer.

This is the problem with all Republican candidates AND Democratic candidates these days. There is no common sense anymore.

doubtful. The majority of the population does not have children in the schools. The majority of those that have children in the schools will not be affected.

If they make sweeping boundary changes, unlike any seen for 40 years, without grandfathering, the local Democrats are taking a giant political risk.

Keep in mind that school board and board of supervisors elections are off-year elections, so a big turnout of upset folks looking to unseat the incumbents could have more impact.

Nope. So many voters a single-issue. Most democrats will only ever vote that way because......abortion.

The single issue for those turning out in an off-year SB election is going to be boundaries not abortion.

No. It will be about banning books and transgender issues.

Local elections in Fairfax in 2027? Nope.

Y’all are seriously miscalculating by thinking you can piss off lots of parents with boundary changes and then fall back on having been more “progressive” in the past.

I think they passed a law (or tried to pass a law) somewhere in Maryland to that effect. Maybe Howard?

It won’t impact the online listings. FCPS explored suing Great Schools - it never went anywhere.

I remember seeing that they had a work session discussing the impact of sites like Great Schools on demographic sorting patterns. I didn't know they wanted to sue the company for simply providing information.

They wanted to explore whether they could sue Great Schools and real estate sites linking to GS ratings for contributing to de facto segregation in FCPS. They were disabused of that notion.

It isn't just parents that vote. A majority of voters probably have grown kids or none at all. They don't care about the boundaries.

1) we need a catchier domain URL like FCPSboundarychanges.com. Should be a splash page of the elevator pitch talking points regarding unethical/questionable things during this process.

2) we need volunteers to hold up signs at major intersections advertising that URL and "You're kids school boundary is changing!"

I think it could double, triple the eyes on this now and pressure on the SB this spring once new boundaries are proposed

You do realize a lot families will be thrilled about the bolded. Do not assume all parents are on your side. You might just wake up a sleeping giant with your banners.

Yeah, you don't know many parents with school aged kids if you think that.

I would think parents of older kids would be more enraged. Elementary kids usually have a much easier time making new friends. I see it all the time at the private school where I teach. Now,
Now, if the kid is a jerk, they won’t be making friends, period!

Sorry, but you are absolutely clueless if you think there is some "sleeping giant" of FCPS who want rezoning.

NO parents of school aged kids want this rezoning.

This is nonsense. While I doubt that most people want rezoning, some people absolutely do. I remember sitting on the sidelines with a fellow team parent who cheerfully said, "I hear they're going to change the boundaries." We are Langly pyramid, and she is Herndon pyramid. She was happy at the prospect that some GF kids would be coming to Herndon.

I never heard her complain about HHS, but I suppose she wanted the new boundaries for reasons that have been expressed in the past by Herndon High parents on this board. I doubt she was writing emails to Gatehouse encouraging the change but she was absolutely happy about the possibility.

I'm sure there are other parents in other pyramids who would welcome a change of school or to have new streets added to their current zone. Maybe they want AP instead of IB, maybe a change would mean their kid stays with a best friend instead of splitting off to different high schools when they get older, maybe with traffic patterns and a new job a different school would be more convenient to get to for sports and events.

Likely the people who are REALLY against new boundaries are more numerous and more passionate than those who would be merely happy with new boundaries, and that's something any board member who wants to continue a career in FC politics would be wise to consider.

This is spot on. I’ve heard Langley parents who live in McLean saying they would have no problem if some of Tysons was assigned to Langley and some of Great Falls was reassigned from Langley to Herndon.

As you point out, those who are unhappy with the proposed boundary changes are going to be far more vocal and organized in their opposition than those who are indifferent or supportive.

Do you hear yourself? This example and the Herndon families that want great falls families to move want to move other peoples kids. Not their own. The Herndon parents want GF families moved in. To move other people’s kids like pawns is awful. And the McLean parents moving great falls kids. Would they be as happy if they were moved to falls church? No. No one wants to move unless you’re moving up in schools. And even then some people don’t want to move.

Shouldn’t they just wait until the Centreville expansion to 3000 is finished?

That’s at least 5 years away. They are doing these reviews every 5 years. Chantilly is one of the most crowded schools. You can’t move kids from under enrolled schools around to fix your agenda and not touch the schools with actual crowding issues

They may care about their property values and the disruption of their communities. FAFO.

You need to remember that DCUM is not real life. According to y’all, Fairfax County is a center-right hotbed that’s been held hostage by a minority of evil democrats, despite election after election proving you wrong. Y’all pronounced everyone on the school board to be done career-wise, yet 3 of those folks went on to state house or senate seats.

My advice: it’s still not snowing much, so go outside and walk around, touch some grass, turn off your device.

Chantilly kids can shift to Westfield if they move the northern boundary to Herndon. They could also move some to Fairfax, especially if they move others out of Fairfax to Woodson or Robinson.

Nope, they are already wealthy AF. They are who they are and confident in their votes.

Is Waples Mill Elementary staying Franklin Middle and Oakton High School?

Greenbrier East going to Oakton makes no sense. Waples Mill is closer

Thoughts?

To clarify, these Langley parents weren’t in favor of moving Great Falls kids to Herndon so much as volunteering that they understood why it might happen and not opposed.

They won’t get moved to Falls Church. Only part of McLean, not Langley, realistically might get moved there.

Well, you could refrain if you know a longer-term solution is not that far away and don’t actually want to start from scratch every five years.

Um, y’all didn’t really let loose with your grand design for boundary changes until last year. Were there hints in the past? Sure. But y’all beat such a hasty retreat in 2019 that many assumed y’all had learned a lesson. Guess not.
