The changes will likely be much broader than the frequently discussed possibilities on DCUM.

Is it because the capacity vs enrollment among the pyramids is so uneven?

Is there a single high school pyramid without a split feeder or out of pyramid AAP feeder?

Given the location and number of schools, they cannot eliminate split feeders. Holmes and Poe for examples will remain split feeders unless they returned TJ to use as a community HS, in which case Holmes could feed entirely to Jefferson and Poe could be the feeder to Annandale (and Jackson could feed entirely to Falls Church).

Note also that recent School Boards have magnified split feeder issues, in particular when they changed Thoreau from a two-way split feeder to a three-way split feeder to Madison, Marshall, and Oakton.

They take credit for eliminating split feeders when it serves some other goal, and otherwise have been fairly oblivious to them.

Coates Elementary School.

Coates feeds into Westfield, not Herndon.

I believe Herndon is not a split feeder.

The PP was questioning whether the Herndon pyramid is without split feeders.

Herndon gets kids from one split feeder, Coates, which splits to Herndon and Westfield. Most of Coates goes to Westfield but a small area north of the Dulles Toll Road goes to Herndon.

Sure, they won’t be able to eliminate them entirely, but there are many split feeders where only a sliver of the boundaries goes on to a different school, impacting a small handful of children in each grade. Why wouldn’t they clean those up during this type of review? One of the objectives is to keep kids in their community.

I don’t disagree, although in some cases the slivers have fought against being reassigned. For example, people in the small part of Vienna ES that feeds to Marshall HS rather than Madison HS opposed getting moved to Freedom Hill ES, which now feeds entirely to Marshall, several years ago when they were cleaning up some boundaries.

Yes.

There is no high school that doesn’t get kids from at least one elementary school that is a split feeder.

What about Kilmer-Marshall?

Oh never mind, just read.

I hope that they are able to do this study and implement changes in the next three years. My oldest is in 6th and we go to a split feeder that goes to a split feeder MS. Would love to have all the kids going to the same schools starting in middle school.

What about Kilmer-Marshall?

More like which elementary school in the Kilmer-Marshall pyramid ISN’T a split feeder? Even Kilmer is a split feeder.

The answer to that question is Freedom Hill and Shrevewood! Stenwood feeds entirely to Marshall but the kids split to Kilmer and Thoreau before they get there.

The rest of the feeders all split with either Madison or McLean.

Another example, Gunston is a split feeder. The Mason Neck kids where Gunston is located go to South County, the rest go to Hayfield. If you look at the attendance map of the school, the non-Mason Neck portion is all located along upper Route 1/Telegraph/Pohick Road. Those kids are all closer to Hayfield. Back when South County was built, the residents of Mason Neck fought for Mason Neck to be zoned to South County. They had kids take cameras onto busses and film how long their bus rides were to Hayfield. Most of the Mason Neck neighborhoods are pretty remote and it took them almost twice as long to get to Hayfield and they also have to drive with rush hour traffic. It's only about 20 or so kids a grade, but there is no interest in sending those kids to a high school twice as far away.

Let's please do something about Carson.

Carson is split feeder into Westfields, South Lakes, Oakton and Chantilly. Four school split feeder.

Floris ES is split feeder into Westfields, Chantilly, and South Lakes. Three school split feeder at elementary school level.

Hopefully that’s the kind of stuff that they’re going to clean up. As well as the little attendance islands that were grandfathered in a bazillion years ago and make no sense. Sangster/Lake Braddock has an attendance island off Pohick behind St. Raymond’s that should probably go to South County - it would be a much shorter bus ride. Not a huge neighborhood and wouldn’t affect that many kids but the less time spent on the bus, the better.

Did everyone get the email about being on the Boundary Review Advisory Committee?

"Dear Fairfax County Public Schools Families,

Fairfax County Public Schools will soon begin a comprehensive review of our school boundaries. You will have opportunities to lend your voice to this important work during many stops along this journey. The first opportunity is to join me as a member of the Superintendent’s Boundary Review Advisory Committee.

On July 18, the Fairfax County School Board approved updates to the Boundary Policy, completing a years-long comprehensive review of the policy for the first time in nearly four decades. The updates provide a clear roadmap for any future boundary adjustments to help ensure better student achievement through enhanced instructional quality, budget optimization, and strengthened student well-being.

The revised policy does not propose specific boundary changes, nor were specific boundaries considered during the policy review. Instead, it is a framework that we will follow as we consider any potential future adjustments.

Your unique perspectives and insights will be invaluable as we work together to ensure this process is transparent, includes significant community participation and feedback, and always keeps students at the center of every decision.

Committee members will be expected to attend regular in-person meetings, review relevant materials, and actively participate in discussions. Your commitment will help us make informed decisions that reflect the needs and priorities of our community.

Please note that participation in the Boundary Review Advisory Committee will be a time-intensive commitment. If you are interested in joining, please complete this application by Friday, October 18. While we value every application, we may not be able to accommodate everyone who applies. It is important to have representation from every FCPS region. We also want to include various community and employee groups. Together, all things are possible.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest regards,..."
