So I just watched this for the first time. My kids are little and not watching movies yet but I'm on maternity leave so I DVRed it the other night.
Why was the big obsession with Elsa? Anna was the hero and the star of the movie it seemed to me. But every little girl 3-6 years of age was so into being Elsa. Was it the song? The cool ice powers? She did not seem likable whereas Anna was sweet and heroic. Yes I need to go back to work so I have better things to contemplate. |

I completely agree - always thought Anna was the more likeable, funnier, and stronger character!
But then again I'm a younger sister who got bossed and pushed around by my older sisters, so maybe I'm biased? |
| It's the long, blonde hair. |
| Elsa is blonde, and she swishes her hips. |
| Agree, Anna is my favorite. But, Elsa has ice powers, the best song, and the really pretty dress...so she might seem more interesting from a little kid's perspective. |
This is what I was afraid of. -OP |
| Totally agree, Anna is definitely the real hero of that movie! Yet my 3 year old is OBSESSED with Elsa. I think it's because she's blond, pretty, has a sparkly dress, has magical powers and has the BIG song. |
I was the bossy older sister and thought Elsa was shitty. I saw the movie too for the first time recently and has the same revelation. |
|
It's the dress, power and song.
I don't think it's the blonde hair per se. |

I remember reading this a while back and thought it was interesting (because I too think Anna is the more interesting sister):
http://time.com/3656230/why-kids-cant-resist-frozen/ In a nutshell: 1) little kids have uncontrollable emotions, so they relate to Elsa's uncontrollable magic 2) duh, she has magic powers 3) they don't notice the sad/lonely thing Elsa has going on 4) Let it Go |
| Stamping your foot and having awesome magic spread is incredible to small kids. |

There was a lot of commentary on this when the movie came out, with most moms wanting their daughters to identify with Anna, and most girls obsessing over Elsa.
Anna really is more identifiable -- she has lot of experiences and emotions that are basically like them: insecurity, wanting more attention from older sibling, making jokes that don't always land, a little clumsy, obsessed with chocolate. Even the two braids in her hair is very relateable. Elsa is the cool big sis that we can never be, with the magic powers and the sparkle dress and the song in the really tough key. Even that damn one sided braid is pretty well impossible (as those of us that have tried to do it for our Elsa obsessed daughters can attest). But I think a lot of moms also really relate to the Elsa "Let it Go" thing. I often want to just walk away from it all and go find my own ice palace. But my ice palace is actually a resort in Hawaii. Because the cold does bother me. Actually, I think a lot of the tween and teen girls relate to the "conceal don't feel...be the good girl you always have to be" thing as well -- as girls and women, we're often stuck being a person that we think we're supposed to be, to meet other people's expectations, and a lot of us would like to just say "f-- it" (by which I mean "freeze it," of course). |
+1. And the power is *sparkly*! |
|
Per my 5 year old niece
1. She has magical powers. This was accompanied by the "duh auntie, thats pretty obvious" facial expression. 2. Let it go. 3. Duh, the powers. FWIW, my 11 year old niece (her sister) preferred Anna. She thought she was funnier and I think she was old enough to pick up on more of their personality traits than the 5 year old. |

Totally agree. Anna saves everyone. But Elsa is blonde, has sparkly dress, sings Let It Go.
