PPs have covered it. Initial fascination when DD first saw it at age 4 was with Elsa for the magic, sparkly ice, braid, and music. We talked a lot about how both sisters were brave and sacrificed for the others. Anna was willing to sacrifice her life. Elsa sacrificed her childhood locked away from her little sister, and ran away to the North Mountain to keep everyone safe.
My child has a physical difference from other kids, and I cried every time I heard Let It Go for months, seeing it as the anthem of a girl recognizing her difference and wanting to be free and accepted for who she was. |
+1 I posted at 13:49 about that. |
| I asked my four-year-old why she liked Elsa and she said, "Elsa has icy magic. I like her song." So, there you have it. |

Agree with all the PPs - it's about the ice powers, the hair tossing, and the song.
Yes, Anna saves everyone - but she's also the one who falls for the prince . . . Elsa turns out to be one strong lady with no romantic interest in sight. So, not such a bad role model for our girls. |

The beauty, powers and awesome song.
Anna is pretty too and well-liked but the blonde bombshell is always the true winner. |
Yeah, this. My girls love the foot stomping. |
| Totally that dress. |
| I've watched this movie a ridiculous number of times and wonder the same thing as OP each time. Elsa is probably one of my least favorite Disney Princesses, right down there with Snow White. Meanwhile Anna is one of my faves! |

When our DD first got into it, she knew it only because of the song. She called it "Let It Go" and never knew the name of the movie for months.
Now her younger sister, currently 18 months old, has already started to sing (in her baby babble words) Let It Go also. I'm assuming she'll be pining for Elsa dresses like her big sister wears soon. For them, it's the song. |

Making it even more ironic (?) that she is the popular one, ORIGINALLY Elsa was supposed to the VILLAIN. Like Snow White step-mother witch type villain. That's definitely the Snow queen MO that Frozen is based on.
But my understanding was after they heard Let It Go by Idina, they couldn't let such a performance belong to a Vilain and the whole plot was rejiggered. Though I guess if their was such a rave over a bad guy, it would have foreshadowed the Malificent and Disney Descendants popularity. http://www.etonline.com/news/171691_what_frozen_would_be_like_if_elsa_were_the_villain/ |
I'm glad they revamped it. As a little sister myself, I identify with Anna (and would do anything for my big sister). But to me, big sister was always calm, unruffled, RESPONSIBLE and a bit remote, having done so many things I haven't. Elsa is really set up there on a pedestal in Anna's eyes and she earns it. She is truly a good big sister. Sniff. Now I'm going to call my sister. |
| Marketing. The Disney machine marketed Elsa as the star. The dolls, the dress, the toys: Elsa was the star. |
| My family watched it for the umpteenth time last night, I really do like Anna. I may be the only person who likes "Love is an Open Door" better than "Let it Go". Her lyrics are a hoot. |
