I’m sick to my stomach.

Yep. Me too. I have 3 draft aged sons sons. While I don’t think the US would utilize the draft again…Trump is crazy. Also, there are HUMANS in Iran and Lebanon (and Gaza, West Bank) being killed. Not “terrorists”. Can we stop with the dehumanizing language?

I watched 4-5 minutes of the CNN Town Hall on Iran tonight. OMG. Our administration’s knowledge of history goes to 1970s. No acknowledgment of what US involvement did to get to that point. Trump likes to call people “low IQ”. Ok. Fine. Well I am so upset our country is being run by people who are “low history”.

History majors, please run for office!!!

This is a war that no expert has said we can win. A ground invasion would require over 100,000 men. A sustained war campaign, many more. Remember we had over 500,000 men in Viet Nam concurrently in '68, and that was even with the SVN army supplying 800,000 and other countries 65,000 more.

And another thing. Not sure how draft exemptions would go, bone spurs notwithstanding. Since everyone has a hs degree now, it wouldn't be that hard for everyone to enroll at a degree conferring college in order to get a deferment.

You need somewhere north of 700,000 troops. Iran's population of 93 million people and mountainous topography will quickly consume troops. It is four times the size of Iraq. It would be like invading California to attack Denver.

Do you need to occupy the entire country? Isn’t there a corridor around the Strait that could be occupied to secure shipping?

How would you stop the drones?

The Strait is 60-100 miles long. Commercial ships aren't going to move unless risk is eliminated. You can't secure that strip with a relatively small number of troops, do anything to secure the Strait, and avoid being absolute sitting ducks themselves. This is insanity and dementia combined.

The terrain along the shore is not like a beach. It's like 50 foot cliffs.

Thank you fo stating the obvious. I’m just surprised at the basic understanding of geography for a DC-based discussion. What about the rest of our country?

The strait is 21 miles across. If we send our kids to secure that strait they will be ambushed. It has never been closed before.

25% of ALL the world’s gas passes through and 20% of ALL the world’s natural gas. Trump and his energy secretary KNOW this basic fact.

The only reason he would possible allow something so dumb is that he is compromised. But the fact that Hegseth and Rubio did not resign shows how power hungry they are. They are willing to destroy the world

Even if you play along and pretend this works (even though it simply cannot). What's the end game? Troops would have to be deployed there forever unless you enact regime change (which again, you cannot). As soon as those troops leave, the Strait is at risk of being closed again. There is no military solution to this. It needs to be political, but Israel is making sure there isn't a table to even sit at.

Trump lifting sanctions on Iran has given that country a bigger windfall than the pallet of cash Obama gave to Iran in exchange for control over their nuclear program.

That windfall is now being used to kill American troops and strangle the global economy.

4-D chess!

Oh it gets worse that. Trump has effectively turned the Persian Gulf into an Iranian lake. When shipping resumes, Iran will require fees from every tanker seeking safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. That is a very lucrative source of revenue. And they can close that Strait at will. Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar all export 100 percent of their oil and LNG through the strait. They will be told to close all US bases and expel all US troops if they want to access global markets. Long term, Iran holds all the cards as Trump likes to say.

Looks like India and Japan have negotiated safe passage of their ships through the Straights.

Meanwhile Trump wants to spend $200B for the same thing.

art of the deal.

I wouldn’t underestimate stupidity and arrogance.

There are 8,000 civilians on Kharg island. Hegseth said no quarter, no mercy. What will the US military do to these civilians? Will it be like Gaza?

The Iranian drones have a range of 600-1,200 miles. Draw a 600 miles circle around the strait. That is the minimum occupation zone needed.
