No one is developing midfielders. It’s entertaining to watch US travel teams go to Europe for a week of soccer. The European coach quickly gravitate towards the US player/s who show potential as midfielders. These are not the “stars” on the team. It’s like the Europeans are selecting for different qualities vs the US. |
| FCV DA teams are predominantly comprised of midfielders. Some are homegrown, some come to FCV because of their proven track record of putting players in college. Some to be in winning teams. It all varies family to family. |
I agree. It's not an FCV problem. It is a US problem. And it get around it, there are a lot of efforts to play around the midfield. Even on the WNT, I have watched plenty of games where the midfield is there to clog up the other team and win balls. Then, the consistent decision is to play it out wide and run it up the side, over and over. |
| FCV values strikers and defenders more and puts the athletes in those roles. Christian likes the club to play like Klopp does. You can be successful without focus on midfielders. |
That style of play is very one dimensional and does not give you many options. You get results as long as you do not run in to a more athletic team or a technical team with similar athleticism. It’s easy to coach. There is not need to change formations, slow down or speed up the game. No matching up different players. Lets face it fast kids are a dime a dozen. You can alway get a fast striker and a fast defender. Those positions are not hard to fill or replace. |
Are you kidding me? Liverpool won UEFA because of its midfield. At times, Klopp has been forced to work around the midfield problem Liverpool used to have but that's not something he would have chose, if he could have done otherwise. What about Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho? https://www.totalfootballanalysis.com/match-analysis/uefa-champions-league-201920-genk-vs-liverpool-tactical-analysis-tactics/amp https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2019/may/30/midfield-engine-liverpool-edge-tottenham-final-reckoning https://www.goal.com/en/amp/news/ucl-2019-20-liverpool-fabinho-midfield-fulcrum/1kb8ea60v4pni168vvo0i2bx5j |
Of course no coach chooses to have weaknesses at any position. It comes down to priority. Klopp chooses pressing and counter pressing as the priority. He will work around weak midfield. Sounds familiar. |
Not even close Pierre. I’ve forgotten more soccer than you’ve probably ever learned. Just face it, the US Women are the best and always have been. But, keep hoping and dreaming about your quaint little Euro-trash teams. BTW, why are you even in the US? Let me guess, we have jobs and your country didn’t. Anyhow, someday your kid will be working for mine and maybe they’ll even play in an adult league and my kid will teach yours how to play. |
And Liverpool was unimpressive until he did. With a midfield, they beat Barca and won the UEFA. So if anything, your Klopp example, however misplaced, proves the point. |
This simply isn’t true. FCV creates teams almost completely with midfielders and moves them to defense or strikers based on ability. |
I agree. I am talking about where the best players play. The best players at FCV becomes forwards. If FCV has YNT call up or a blue chip D1 player, you can bet money it’s an attacking player. Playing forward in the system requires players that can press and transition quickly. The forwards are ALSO great defenders. They often become defenders at the next level. Emily Fox is a great example. Because they press, they need good athletic defenders who can play a high back line and contain. So they are the next priority. The mids are less important on a compressed field that presses. Defenders in containment often pass to the forwards to counter. It’s just the system. German style soccer. Klopp. Gegenpress. Bundesliga ball. Lot’s of names for it. But just don’t pretend you are in a Guardiola system. |
Then how do you explain the "call up" to multiple national training centers etc etc for the defender and mid - fielders? The one "forward" called up is listed as a midfielder on the DA roster and a defender on other sites. ^^^^ This is just some dad spouting about their soccer knowledge from 30 years ago. |
That player is the exception, not the rule. |
that player is not recognized as a forward. you just made my point. |
That she isn't recognized as a forward is the point. Most are considered forwards. She therefor is the exception. |
