Not getting another Holocaust speaker after the previous one passed away is not the same as not teaching the Holocaust at all. I can guarantee they are still learning about the Holocaust, with or without a guest speaker. |
Oh really? Because Nysmith explicitly said that the event was cancelled due to the Israel-Gaza conflict, not because the speaker died (other speakers were available and had been offered). We don’t have to guess as to why it was cancelled. He said it out loud. |
DP. This is surprising. The Nysmith family has always been politically conservative although they kept it quiet. Ken is probably a lot more sympathetic to Israel than a lot of Gen Xers. |
| I saw a Nysmith magnetic bumper stickers for the first time last week driving through Vienna and I don't know how people still have the pride to leave that thing on their car while the school is so obviously and deeply embarrassing. |
Okay? There’s no evidence in the current situation to support that. |

Mr. Nysmith also barred Mr. Vazquez and Dr. Roy’s daughter from participating in a school event the following day where she was scheduled to receive a medal for a science fair project. He also refused other families’ requests to allow them to collect the award for her. In addition, he did not send the children’s personal belongings that they had left at their school without any inkling that they would not be back the following day. Incredibly, those personal belongings were kept by Nysmith School for no reason whatsoever until May 13 – two months later – when Nysmith School sent an email to Mr. Vazquez and Dr. Roy informing them that they would be permitted to retrieve the children’s belongings but had to do so by May 23 or their belongings would be thrown out. Another school parent ultimately retrieved the belongings for the family.
What a dick. |
This guy needs to go. He seems like a vindictive a-hole. Who does this kind of thing to a child? I hope the court (and the court of public opinion) holds him accountable for his ridiculous actions. Are there really families who are returning to this school? I don’t know any NySmith families, but I certainly have a different opinion of that school and those affiliated with it after reading about this situation. |
| I'm a pretty staunch anti Zionist but this school sounds like a hot mess and I would avoid. |
+1. And all the current families who are justifying the HOS behavior on this board makes it sound even worse. Yuck. What kind of families view this behavior as ok? So much underlying racism happening in these responses. Wrong is wrong. HOS was wrong. |
| who will ever take Nysmith seriously after this gross! |
This will dog them for years to come I sense. They should have fired or put on admin leave the HOS immediately vs going into PR crisis and defensive mode. Now they have to live with it for the long term because the deafening silence of no action against the HOS means anything that comes now after legal action is too little too late for most in court of public opinion. … |
This still feels like you are blaming anti semitism on… Jews? |
Can anyone explain the value proposition behind Nysmith at $46,000 plus a year? Rachel Carson is across the street. I was no great shakes as a student with a poor socioeconomic background, yet my kids from Carson went to Princeton. Anecdotal but certainly a reflection of social mobility. Sure, their successes were entirely own but I could not understand Nysmith’s value add. This recent scandal raises the value question all the more. |
Because not everyone in the area is zoned for a school like Carson or its elementary feeders. |
The HOS is the owner. There’s no authority above him to hold him accountable for anything. |
