There is always two sides to a story. This is part of the Washington Post story today: “ It says that harassment worsened after school officials hung a Palestinian flag in the gym. But Nysmith said the gym already featured flags from more than 50 countries, including Israel. In another incident, the complaint says, students in a social studies class were asked to produce a composite drawing of a strong historical leader, and the resulting image had “the unmistakable face of Adolf Hitler.” Nysmith told The Washington Post last summer that one of the students who produced that drawing was Jewish, descended from a Holocaust survivor, and that the image was being viewed out of context. “This was not a glorification of anything,” he said. Vazquez had been heavily involved with the school, but the relationship soured after a contentious meeting March 11, two days before the expulsions. Roy and Vazquez said that in the meeting, the headmaster said their daughter should “toughen up,” which Nysmith has denied. He said he asked the couple whether they were accusing him of being antisemitic. Roy and Vazquez said in their filing that they “immediately responded that they were not saying that.” (And then they immediately go to the Brandeis Center to sue him for being antisemetic.) |
You skipped the step in between where he kicked out their kids with no notice, not even allowing them to retrieve their belongings. |
It’s actually a horrible school to send ANY child if you value kindness and acceptance. We made the horrendous mistake of sending our kids there for a few years and the damage that was done by staff and other students will be lifelong. My Oldest often refers to that time as “ the worst years of her life “and my younger one is showing psychological damage from his experienc at the school. We thought about suing, and I am overjoyed to see the school finally get what they deserve. I hope it causes the school to close entirely. |

Thanks to the above poster for such a balanced overview of Nysmith.
I think it is pretty clear that learning is viewed as cool at Nysmith. I am talking about learning, not getting good grades. That environment is pretty unusual, even in private schools. My DS who spent many years at Nysmith has had a lot of success and I am certain that Nysmith had a lot to do with that. He really ran with the opportunities that Nysmith provided. Some of those opportunities were sort of simple, like learning how to type at an incredible rate of speed, other opportunities were intellectual (accelerated math, accelerated foreign language). That said, the school is very different and certainly not for everyone. And to be fair, we did have a couple problems while there that never got addressed. As for the head of school, I took issue with him on an issue that was a school issue, not really specific to my kid, and sent him an email. He was very fair in his response. He is a reasonable person, as far as I could tell. Of course, my interactions with him were not on an emotionally charged issue, not a big ticket issue. |
The settlement literally says there is no admission of wrongdoing. It's $100,000 to get Virginia Attorney General Miyares off their back. |
Total narcissistic nightmares |
Louder for the people in the back!!! 🥰 |
Always using antisemitism to perpetuate their constant state of victimhood to get their way. In this situation, they made $100k for their trouble and are still trying to bring down a school because the school would not kneel to them. |
Yes, it speaks that it’s much cheaper to settle and pay a small amount to avoid legal fees. |
As a lawyer who has settled scores of non-meritorious claims against my clients, this doesn’t look like a nuisance settlement to me. |
Very doubtful that you’ve settle scores of claims. The settlement is a bit more than 1-year of tuition for the 3 kids. This was an easy choice to get them to go away and a de minimus hit to the school. |
Attorney General Miyares was breathing down their necks. That's not a nuisance, that's extortion. |
