You mean like sports? |

I think reducing the entire DE&I concept to being about "quotas" is both wrong and misguided. Part of the reason the field and the framework has expanded in recent years is to move away from that. It is most certainly not only about race.
It is about creating an environment where people from all backgrounds (explicitly not limited to race) are represented, where the conditions are such that inequities become less relevant, and all those represented actually experience equal welcome and impact. Would anyone disagree with that? |
If we started with the NBA, 25% of the now 75% of African American players will be put on a Performance Improvement Plan, take DEI courses, and give up their spots to whites and Hispanics. But that still would leave 50% African American and 50% white and Hispanic. Since non-Latino whites are 72% of the population in the U.S., we need to make the numbers more equitable and inclusive, so 72% of the NBA players are non-Latino whites. It's sad that an additional number of NBA players will lose their jobs, but DEI is important. |
Holy cow, the concept of remuneration based on profit is nit difficult to understand. |
Diversity, equity and inclusions goes beyond just race. There is economic diversity, equity and inclusion; gender diversity, equity and inclusion; etc. The goal of the TJ effort was to ensure students who have the aptitude to do STEM — but maybe not the finances for endless tutoring pre-admissions — can get into TJ and do just as well. My mother taught at a similar school (one that recruited kids from all walks of life) and they all excelled once they were in an environment that fostered learning. |
To achieve unity among several disparate groups, against a common enemy. White, cisgender males. |
DE&I is not about quotas. The NBA has a DE&I program- https://inclusion.nba.com/ |
UMD is a non-profit. If sports are about profit they should break away and be their own organization. |
Come on. The athletics provide revenue to UMD- revenue that can be used for new facilities, to hire better professors, etc. "Profit" may have technically been the wrong word, but even non-profits highly compensate people that bring in revenue. |
Who cares if the next King LeBron James will give up his spot for a less qualified non-Latino white. DEI is important. |
It is the big question mark. Whether differences in outcomes and performance is due to racism or something else. The sports aspect is a good contradiction that is resolved by simply ignoring it as it doesn't fit the narrative. |
https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011/11/22/maryland-will-cut-eight-teams-mitigate-athletic-budget-deficit UMD athletics has a history of deficits and mismanagement. |
| I got a feeling the DE&I backlash is starting to emerge. The moral busybodies have taken what is otherwise a noble cause. |
Not sure about UMD, but many college athletic programs are not money makers. They bring in a lot of “revenue” and it’s still not enough to cover the nut. These same places also rely pretty heavily on adjuncts making $20k/year. |

It’s another way to tell white people to pay their taxes, and then White people stomp their feet in anger and continue to enjoy depreciation and loss carry forwards to avoid paying any taxes.
That’s the basic gist. |
