Coming to terms with having an average kid

Anonymous
Average here is above average everywhere else (academically and athletically, that is). Keep that in mind. At my high school you were probably valedictorian if you got a 1300 on the SAT. The kids who are average here excel in college.

I say this not to “ooze mediocrity,” but to keep things in perspective. Don’t lose the forest for the trees.

OP’s son is part of a large very disturbing trend nationwide — lazy, unmotivated and bottom of the class video-game addicted boys who inevitably end up failing or dropping out of college.

Delusional thinking that boys like this are going to magically turn into success stories does not help anyone. You need to confront the issue, not punt it and pray.

NP here. Gee, PP, are you my DH???? Our new 6th grader is recently diagnosed HFA. Video games with friends, and anime, are his passions. DH catastrophizes daily that this is what our boy will become. I don't think he is magically going to turn into Elon Musk, Dan Aykroyd or any other "cool" HFA/Aspie success story. I don't delude myself that his MS report card will be covered with A's and B's like ES or that he's headed to a top college. I am grateful beyond measure for his perceptiveness, his sense of humor, his intellect, his ability to self-regulate in big public school setting and many other things.

I knew you’d show up here! Welcome back.

Lol

I’m steering mine into the trades.

The pp who says “delusional” in every one of her posts in every thread is unhinged.

mine can follow in the great tradition of below average men and become cannon fodder

Don't worry, the patriarchy has him covered. Centuries of white men have paved the way for your average white boy to succeed and to achieve an above-average lifestyle.
