Do you count walking as exercise?

Lol @ the person who thinks nobody can or is walking 35 miles a week. A moderately not lazy person probably walks that just living. Add in a 2.5 mile walk after dinner each day and it’s incredibly easy to do 35+

Hiking doesn’t really build muscle either. Resistance training builds muscle. Walking still has tons of health benefits and will have overall impact on your physique even if you’re already lean and muscular.

Hiking on gentle, flat terrain? No. But hiking on trails with hills, rocks, or lots of "stairs" will absolutely built muscle.

Ok well in that case you’d have to concede walking on hills is as effective as hiking.

PP here, and walking on hills is awesome exercise! Hell, you can even do them on the treadmill. Doing intervals 5 & 15 really shaped my butt/legs, and helped me lose weight. Provided you do it the right way (none of this 'holding on' nonsense you see frequently at gyms these days) it can be an effective form of exercise, and good training for outdoor hiking.

All those folks in the Blue Zones walk, that's all they do. They herd their sheep, they WALK to the market, the WALK to visit their friends etc.

Common sense - of course walking is exercise, and carries a lot of other benefits as well including Vit D from the sunshine, fresh air, time to clear your mind which also lowers your blood pressure. Not everything has to be an Orange Theory class.

No, that's not all they do.

People in the Blue Zones (and pre modernization) also do their own chores, clean their own houses, CARRY their own groceries home from the market, make all their own food from scratch, tend to their own gardens, etc. Walks to all errands may include lots of hills and stairs. Their cardio and strength training is built into their daily lifestyle, and to compare their walking to a suburbanite walking for an hour in their neighborhood... is completely different.

But yes I agree, one should get outside daily if possible. But all walking is not remotely the same.

My neighborhood has very steep hills. I power walk up these hills on the days I don’t go to Orange Theory class and do a mix of jogging/running push on the flat areas and then power walk back up the hills for about an hour. It is sometimes more challenging than my OTF class and my heart rate is always going and I’m sweating. It’s a great work out and agree my butt and legs looks so much better and I’m not having issues with my joints. But it’s not a flat walk at a leisurely pace-it’s a fast power walk uphill.
