When is LAMB closing the Brookland campus?

/\ sure, but is that enough of a reason to give up a “neighborhood” school and complicate our lives for years? If the school is markedly better (or MV is deficient in some significant way), then that’s worth it. But if it’s just preference and nice to have, then I’m not sure it is. It’s just a difficult choice when you have a kindergartener and no crystal ball.

We actually did lottery into MV but turned it down ... perhaps will regret it someday. Still feels too new.

Would you ebike downtown after? In bad weather? Trying to think that through because we’ve never bike commuted across town without a backup plan.

Yes exactly. Probably not in poor weather. In that case maybe park and take the 16th street bus?

Honestly doubt either of us will have to work in person every day, so hoping to work things out between carpools, shuttle, ebike, and just driving. If parents can split the duty it’s much easier.

That sounds exhausting. Imagine the time and energy you would save by attending a school near your home. Quality of life is important. [/quote

It’s not actually that far.

Do you take your kids across town to any activities? Is it exhausting? We do it for the education we want our kids to have. That’s also important.

DP. Yeah but twice a day, 5 days a week for 5-8 years is an entirely different commitment. There’s a cost benefit that goes into whether that commute is worth the incremental increase of that particular school versus a neighborhood option (of which there are many in Brookland).

We did a Mich Park - Military Road/Missouri Ave commute for several years without strain because we had one spouse doing drop off and a second doing pick up. Once we're back to normal, we plan the same for the 14th Street campus.

We were first at the SD campus with a home not in NE; there was one parent responsible for both pick up and drop off. That was unsustainable.

You are lucky to have this option. Many families would make the move if it was an option.

We had this option but turned it down, mainly because a lot of MV families were also unhappy particularly around the admin's opening of this new campus, plus a lot of discussion about no DCI guarantee.

Now that MV8 seems to be doing well we have re applied but have not gotten in, though unsure we would accept spot.

What you would be giving up is Montessori. A lot of people seem to forget that LAMB is not only about the Spanish, but a type of education which is markedly different from what you would find at MV. There are also rumors of MV8 moving too. It has no playground.

You know that LAMB doesn't have DCI guarantee anymore, right? Neither Stokes, DCB, or MV.

LAMB and all the members of the consortium have the same guarantee as they've had all along. 50 seats at DCI are reserved for LAMB "graduates;" for 20-21, LAMB is graduating about 40 kids. The next two years worth of LAMB graduates (i.e., current 3d and 4th graders) should all be able to secure a seat at DCI. For today's 2d graders and younger: If all stay at LAMB and if DCI does not add seats, there will be lottery for the 50 LAMB seats and the excess will still have preference over kids not from a consortium member.

Currently, there are 40 seats at DCI reserved for Stokes graduates; 50 for DCB; and 70 for MV.

It is hard. We had a kindergartener and no crystal ball when we made the choice, but we already were at LAMB; staying with the familiar is easier while changing something that works is hard. Had we not already been at one school already we would have chosen MV.

I would argue that worse than the commute is having few friends in the neighborhood. This is a neighborhood, though, where every other child goes to a different school (every charter plus Burroughs, etc). Still very few at LAMB.

MV family. There is a timeline/ planning for the expansion of the 8th street building. Not sure where these rumors of a move come from. There is no playground, but they plan to resume recess at Turkey Thicket. DD loved the walk over and the playground there.
