When is LAMB closing the Brookland campus?

Would you ebike downtown after? In bad weather? Trying to think that through because we’ve never bike commuted across town without a backup plan.

Yes exactly. Probably not in poor weather. In that case maybe park and take the 16th street bus?

Honestly doubt either of us will have to work in person every day, so hoping to work things out between carpools, shuttle, ebike, and just driving. If parents can split the duty it’s much easier.

That sounds exhausting. Imagine the time and energy you would save by attending a school near your home. Quality of life is important.

It’s not actually that far.

Do you take your kids across town to any activities? Is it exhausting? We do it for the education we want our kids to have. That’s also important.

DP. Yeah but twice a day, 5 days a week for 5-8 years is an entirely different commitment. There’s a cost benefit that goes into whether that commute is worth the incremental increase of that particular school versus a neighborhood option (of which there are many in Brookland).

Increase of LAMB over our IB or local DCPS? Yes, worth it.

Other charters? We’d need to lottery in which so far we haven’t except once. We did our homework and made this decision.

Having both Montessori and Spanish is truly rare and for us it’s worth it.

Good luck but the grind and stress will wear you down. Others have tried and and decided it wasn’t worth it.

And others have done it and decided it was worth it. We did it for 4 years from 16th St. Heights, (living close to Kingsbury), to Taylor St. & then SD. It wasn't as nice as walking to our neighborhood school, but lots and lots of us did it and very few of those families have left the school. So many long-time families at the school understood that we were in a charter school that could move at any time and had the right to do it. It is the price you pay for choosing a charter school. And no one expected the school to shuttle our kids. Our children have gone to 5 different campuses in the 10+ years we have been a LAMB family!

5 campuses? Why do they move so often?

If you're going downtown, going from 16th St Heights to Brookland to downtown is a detour, but likely all in the same direction. Different from going in the opposite direction (Brookland to 16th St Heights), then all the way back down to downtown. Not impossible, but harder and longer.

How are these different commute types? Brookland and 16th St. Heights are almost directly east-west of each other. You can drive from Brookland to 16th St. heights and then right down 14th or 16th to downtown.

Well, our family as an example started at Taylor St for one year (or 2), which was always temporary. Then we went to SD for a few years. And then we transferred to the existing MO campus. All for our first child. And then our 2nd child moved to LAMB at DCI because their older sibling had entered DCI. Now 2nd is at Kingsbury. There were a few other campuses before we started. Very very few charter schools stay in one location. But LAMB has not been quiet about their wish to have all their students in one campus. Hence Kingsbury.

I can’t stand this parent. First of all, I am assuming Cristina didn’t lie to your face and tell you the campus wasn’t working. She did to many families. Second of all congratulations on being privileged enough to be able to make this commute, not everyone can.

I am so disgusted with this line of thinking. I’m glad you made it work but it doesn’t mean everyone can. And honestly? Try to contain your glee that undesirable parts of DC are not able to come to lamb. It’s getting really obvious.

They couldn’t get their act together. That’s why. Irresponsible financial decisions and no foresight or big picture thinking. Incompetence. Parents who were too afraid and grateful and didn’t want to make waves.

Those are all really close to each other. Not the same thing as a parent who was told the school would always be at the Brookland campus. Some parents, Like myself, made permanent choices about where to live based on these lies. Please stop patting yourself on the back. It’s so tiresome.

Also why are you so opposed to a shuttle bus? Afraid of too many black kids? Be honest!

Oh the too many black kids trope is so tiring. There are black kids that live in Ward 4 that wouldn't need to take a shuttle. The shuttle debate for me comes down to cost. If the school has to fund a portion of this, then this is money that is not spent on serving the whole student body. The school wanted one campus to consolidate costs and this now becomes an extra cost for the school. And the fee schedule shared by the school suggested they were covering some costs. If they can get additional funding, or families have to pay for it out of pocket, then I think it is a great idea. But the sense of entitlement by some parents that chose to go to a charter school that by its nature can be located anywhere in the city is tiresome. I never expected my charter school to use their funding to transport my child around when a charter school is not a neighborhood school. Entitlement and privilege can go both ways.

And I am sorry to those families that were told and believed the school would always stay at Brookland. I understand your frustration. Not all parents who believe the school should provide a shuttle were told this though, and my frustration is with them.

Wow. I don’t like you.

I can see both sides. If the shuttle is a significant cost, then it makes sense to use that money in a way that benefits the entire school instead of a small minority of students. On the other hand, if the school made promises about staying in Brookland and/or providing a shuttle, then it seems reasonable to expect them to follow through.

That’s the point of this whole thread. School lied to parents about the permanent location at SD. Now there likely will be no shuttle. If no shuttle this year, pretty good bet there will be no shuttle the following year.

Then a current parent, who doesn’t have much insight or empathy, pats herself on the back about her commute in the past which is much different than the horrendous commute the families at SD will have to do.

This is why parents are angry. The SD families are treated as 2nd class citizens if that.

Well if you don’t like it, we’ll happily take your seat. Better than moving to Maryland. 😉
