Do parents get CogAt scores?

Furthermore, the test this year had removed a chunk of other sections which kids did not get a chance to be assessed. So the test is pretty skewed towards a certain type of thinking, possibly quick problem-solving skills. It your child is a thinker and deliberates over a problem, then he/she may not do well in the test, because there really isn't enough time to mull over possibilities.

CogAT scores or not, these tests don't address the much-needed improvement in 2nd graders' reading/writing and math skills at APS. 2nd grade level skills are so far behind for virtual learners that they should just focus on PALS assessment and do away with these fancy tests that don't address the inherent learning issues our kids are facing in school.

Speak for yourself. My 2nd grader did really well on PALs. Made more than a year’s worth of academic growth. Taking the CoGat didn’t interfere in any way.

I think APS needs to focus on both. And have a good plan in place for how to deal with what will likely be an increase in disparities between abilities of kids.

We did not get ours yet (from Abingdon.)

For those who were screened for gifted services with high CogAT scores, have you received news of being identified?
Anonymous
Not yet...but DS excels at morning meeting and the pledge of allegiance so we should be good to go.

We got an email today saying our 1st grade DD was identified based on her tests. She was referred for testing based on teacher recommendation, it wasn't identification based only on the Cogat given to everyone in 2nd and 3rd grade.

PP - we did not get her Cogat score though, just that she was identified for placement in gifted.

The CogAT scores don't automatically guarantee idenitification, but high scores are automatically screened for eligibility. DD didn't have high CogAT scores, but was identified based on her school work, prizes won, other test scores and overall behavior. There is a whole list of things they look out for, so your DD must have excelled in these areas.

Yes, sorry, reread my response and realized it was unclear. She is in first grade, so wouldn't have taken the test in APS this year (APS is playing catch up and screened only 2nd and 3rd grade). She was identified by her teacher, took the Cogat and based on those and all the other work product and discussions, was identified to receive gifted services.

I think this was my child too. CogAT scores were good, above average, but not super high. She is a good student and an excellent reader, but I figure that’s a lot of kids in APS.

Yes, a few weeks ago. DS1 was originally identified in kinder for math and reading. He is in 3rd and took the cogat and scored in the 99th percentile. We got an email a few weeks ago saying he was identified as gifted for science and social studies.
