Do parents get CogAt scores?

What does this mean?

If it's to be eligible for gifted services, what does your school's RTG say? They don't just rely on CoGat, but on a host of other things to be identified. Unless you're thinking of qualifying for programs like Johns Hopkins' CTY. Curious to know why you'd think the student should have scored higher - did you prep?

Agreed! How can you as a parent state that your student "should have" scored higher?

Are rankings modified to factor in Race/ethnicity/culture/language/Socioeconomics...?

Highly doubt it.

I don’t know about these cogat scores. My kid isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed and yet scored 96-97 percentile. Must have guessed lucky

It’s absolutely bonkers that people have their kids prep for this test. My kid is very bright but doesn’t do well on things like this. DD Recommended for gifted but doesn’t score well on this test so not eligible. Doesn’t really matter so much to me because I know the teachers always make sure they are challenged. But for kids Who have never seen logic problems like this to be scored against kids who are prepped, seems a little inequitable. Of course you’re going to have truly gifted students who will do wonderful no matter what. But studying your kid into the gifted program bonkers.

We had given these CoGat/OLSAT-like questions in the past to get DC to do some mind puzzles - we didn't know much about gifted services, just as challenges in her free time, and she found them fun. Ironically, we got a letter from school a few days ago about DC being referred for gifted services (seeking our consent to proceed with screening), but her CoGat scores are just average. I don't think she'll be identified, but it's OK. We supplement on our own anyway.

Does anyone know what kind of a score kids need for an automatic gifted referral in Arlington base don their CoGAT score. We are new to the district and got an email that our kids were both being referred based on their scores but we have not actually seen their scores yet. I am just curious.

It's a good idea to ask the school RTG and the test coordinator. Did you fill in the parent consent and info form?

PP here. Yes I filled in the parent consent and info forms. I feel like I did not do a great job with the parent info sheet. I was in a rush when I did it and couldn't come up with great examples for the questions about my kids behavior and then of course after I submitted I thought of a bunch of examples -- oh well. Their teachers had already recommended them and they were already getting some gifted services without the CoGAT scores so not how much will actually change. I was going to ask the testing coordinator when tests are going home, but I didn't want to bug her during SOL season.

If you submitted the Google form, I believe you can retrieve that email confirmation and edit your form.

...sorry, I forgot to add, that is, if you haven't already gone past the deadline for submission.

This CogAt test is worthless everyone says our student is gifted...yet bombed the CogAt. Seriously APS?

What kind of scores end up getting referred for gifted services? The school's gifted teacher told me that the scores are just one of the factors considered (along with teacher referrals, parent referrals, a portfolio of the student's work - I assume the teacher has collected this as I haven't been asked for it). I'm just curious if its like everything over a certain percentage gets gifted services, or what. The school's gifted teacher didn't want to commit to anything like that (understandably). We're in lower ES so I'm not really worried, just more trying to figure out what this process is and how it works.
