Will DC metro be a good fit for us ideologically?

Anonymous
We are coming from a place that was rabidly blue and people were taking politics to residential life and local school life. Not talking about politics is totally fine with me.

OP, if you just tell us specifically where you’re coming from people can better make neighborhood comparisons.

If you're down with empire you will find a fit in the capital.

Half of these rich white people would fly a Confederate flag instead of posting a BLM sign if a quorum of their friends did. If spouting “woke” cliches got you fired or cancelled these same people would have Laura Ingraham’s politics. These same people look down on Bernie voters almost as much as they do on Trump voters. Blue MAGA is what their proper term is, not “woke.”

Stop projecting.

We are looking for a place that would be politically diverse and where people are generally open minded and not up in arms if you are not woke enough or don't uniformly recite CNN and/or liberal outlets or vice versa, we don't discriminate. We are likely to live in the residential or suburban area as we want more space and outdoors. I really dislike wokeness in general, so a woke neighborhood would not be a good fit, neither would be predominantly hard core republican or religious area. I am hoping DC metro is a mix due to it being the seat of power and variety of political views represented. Is this true?

Most of the DC area is blue, but different shades of blue. You have navy, teal, aqua, etc... So the hard core red areas are further out, past the Beltway in the exurbs.

It's hard to judge a city or even a neighborhood based on some enthusiastic 'politics is my hobby' type folks. Because they are all over the place. It's the enthusiasts who are the teachers who organize the kindergarten BLM or anti-gun march around the block. They are on the neighborhood email list. They are no more a reflection of the whole neighborhood as the guy who goes on and on about preserving trees (even the ones with roots that screw up your plumbing). But some neighborhoods may have more of those types than others and it is hard to tell just based on voting patterns.

But good news, you have the power to let those types in your life, or not. You can limit your interactions to superficial topics or to just waving 'hi'. Make friends with those worthy of your friendship.

On schools. How do you define diversity? The answer is for you, not me. I'm some rando on the internet who cares what I think. If the type of diversity in the school you want is important to you, then your city/town/ unincorporated area/ neighborhood search might be based on school boundaries for the type of school you want.

Not at our DC playground. Thankfully.

Op,
Are you a Trump sort of Republican or just a normal Republican. I think fairfax county would work pretty well for the latter. I’m out in Burke though and even here with the heavy military presence there were zero Trump signa I recall seeing here and few if any people that I recall speaking well of him.

Overall: The entire county is generally anti-Trump in ways that it is not “anti-normal-Republican”.

If you are a Trump kind of Republican then Loudon or Prince William (both quite far fromDC for commuting though) would be your main bet.

I just reread the thread to be sure. No one said that.

Great Falls.

We have normal Democrats and normal Republicans.

It's very nice.

Funny you say this - I was just in Burke for a doctor’s appointment (it was my first time in the area - we live in NW DC) and there was literally an adopt-a-road sign for a stretch that was sponsored by “Supporters of President Donald Trump” or something along those lines.

Perhaps PP is referencing this - although it's not exactly a "threat":

Just bear in mind that any metro populated area you move into is likely to change significantly over the time you’re there. Our country is in the midst of massive demographic change and regardless of the minority party’s desperate grasp, in 20-30 years they will be even more if a minority as reflected in the larger population. There is a marked trend toward social liberalism in the electorate. If you want to be safe from that, I suggest you embrace a rural lifestyle.

Ironic given the numbers of rural communities saved by immigration..

I’ve never encountered any wokeness in Arlington. It’s mostly democratic, but there are some closeted republicans. It’s never been a problem.

I'm in VA outside the beltway, and OP needs to go further out that this. Plenty of BLM signs and outdoor mask wearing in Fairfax, and everybody I know is vaccinated or wants to be.

Keep heading west, OP. Or south.

Western Fairfax here. We’re too woke for OP. Who lost me at wanting Trump and Biden signs to co-exist in peace. This area is full of the people who had to live with Trump here and try to keep the government functioning through the nuttiness. We know how corrupt, dangerous and bad it was. And we were here 1/6. Just no. Bush, Romney, etc signs. Sure. Not Tru,p. Also, a very immigrant heavy area. Very high vaccine acceptance. My kids aren’t little anymore, but the tweens and teens are masked. Lots of emphasis on academics and college admissions. Most kids go big into sports or fine arts as well.

OP would be miserable. Head West OP. Western Loudoun maybe. I’d say Prince William but (lowers voice) the Hispanics are there). Good luck!

That's fine, I just don't want it to be rabidly politically active blue-only neighborhood. We had lived in blue cities and come from a very progressive one and I am quite liberal. I just prefer a place where there are both Biden and Trump signs at election and diversity of opinions, e.g. tolerance towards differences as I do not fall cleanly into either political party any longer. I would think DC must have political variety in the city itself and certainly in nearby burbs by the nature of what this city is about. Also we are a mixed race family.

You’ll want to move outside the beltway for sure. I think I saw two Trump signs total in Arlington. A lot more out in Loudon county. I do not consider myself ‘woke’ and I’m not even really sure what that means, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere near any Trump signs. I’m sure there are some Republicans in my neighborhood, but I certainly don’t want to hear about it.

Psst. You do live near Trump voters, you just don't know it. Hint: We're the nice ones who always smile at you.

We do know it. You can’t hide it.

We smile back because we don’t want to get shot.

But OP wants GQP accepted as well. Is that Great Falls?
