I can get my kids through Algebra I and part of Geometry and Statistics. I should not have to learn Calculus to teach my kid. I'm a liberal arts major and last took calc in 1995. I certainly hope someone who teaches for a living could do better than I could.

Previous changes website had a part explaining that kids will not be missing out on multivariable calculus in high school.

Around 18:00 they start bashing the need for calculus.

Please post other time spots to highlight. I'd like to make a list that people can forward and have people understand what the changes are.

As in kids will still be offered multivariable calculus in high school? If so, how? Summer school calculus?

Or that kids won't miss it if it's not available? If that's the case, as someone who took it in high school, yes they absolutely will.

VOTE.

There is an election in November for statewide offices.

Vote out the idiots you elected last time.

What are the alternatives? And how are they different than these idiots?

No?

That's your problem. Not the state's. Grow up.

It's our nation's problem. This shouldn't be about outcomes for the individual. We need our schools to produce the best and the brightest to ensure we continue to be technology leaders in a global economy. Reducing education to the lowest common denominator so no one comes out ahead of someone else does not help our country move forward.

No one else in the world will hold their children back so people from the US can succeed. We shouldn't be doing it either.

Here are the house of delegates candidates:

Here are the executive branch candidates:

School board isn't up until 2023, but there are recall petitions circling for 3 of them.

My "circle of concern" is for BOTH of my children - the AAP kid AND the one who struggles to keep up, and the latter concerns me more.

You're 100% correct. Kids can be pretty big jerks, especially from late elementary through 10th grade. It is likely that kids who find the pace incredibly slow and are bored will incorrectly blame kids like your kid for slowing down the class. Placing a bunch of very advanced kids into a classroom with regular kids and below average kids will lead to the advanced kids rolling their eyes whenever a kid asks an easy question, snickering at or mocking the slower kids, or being overly dramatic about how slow and easy the class is. This will not lead to average or below average kids gaining confidence in their abilities.

Are there any special elections where this issue can be brought to the forefront? If a candidate surprisingly loses, like AOC in New York knocking off a top House Democrat, then everyone will pay attention.

On PBS's website, there is a video on immigration, that at one point reveals Paul Ryan reached a deal with Raul Gutierrez on an immigration amnesty, that had the support of the majority of House Republicans. All that remained was to meet with John Boehner and schedule a vote. As Ryan and Gutierrez were having celebratory drinks, Dave Brat defeated Eric Cantor in a primary with immigration as a top issue, and all the support withered.

If there are no special elections, then putting up a primary challenger to someone could also work.

The deadline to make the 2021 ballot has already come and gone. Best chance right now is to get it on the VA GOP's agenda, but the VA GOP has shown little will to be sane and actually win anything in this state, sadly.

Do Democrats know that they are risking elections with these decisions?

True unfortunately. And I say that as a Democrat but having 2 viable choices is much better than 1 bat-sh*t-crazy one that's drunk the Trump Kool Aid and 1 that has this proposal as a poison pill part of their platform.

Goodness. People track all sorts of ways. Elementary they often test each month or each quarter on different assessments. So no one is left behind. I've also seen it in Fairfax County where they have an extra help or enrichment session each day and weekly pull kids into those. There are some good practices that help kids get ahead when they are ready and not fully tracked that also help the teacher. Putting all the kids together of all abilities all the time and getting rid of classes does not help anyone.

Well there is a fool on this board that always says they will "care about education and not equity". As if those are inextricable. At best you get someone like that but benign, at worst you get the Trumpian wing of the party which is likely and its a shit show for a place that isn't just white, hetero, religious, etc.

I do wish the school board for FCPS wasn't such a political stepping stone. I do agree that is an issue because the size of the district certainly lends itself to people who are more ambition focused vs mission focused. I will give people that gripe. But "vote RED YALL" is not exactly a solution here. People's values are going to kick in and they won't vote for the opposition endorsed candidates if they show they are aligned with the kinds of people who storm the capitol, for example.

Will they vote for the candidates aligned with the kinds of people who rioted & burned cities all summer? Their kill count is higher.

I think this is exactly the point the VDOE is making. Very, very few people need calculus in their lives.
