I just saw your recs trailers and My brilliant friend is promising. I will give it a try.

I did watch When the Eagles Fly with the Shtisel actor and it was okay. Not out of this world great but worth the time. I forwarded some violent scenes but there is a lot of human factor in this movie.

I loved period dramas The Crown, Victoria and Bolivar.

For those who do enjoy a more sensationalized take on Orthodox Jews, you would probably like the series A Touch Away. It's one 8-episode season, available on Amazon Prime. Orthodox girl falls in love with secular boy, but backward oppressive Orthodox society stands in their way.

Its depiction of Orthodoxy is rather trite. But it does a nice job depicting the challenges that Soviet Jews faced when they arrived in Israel and the two young leads are appealing.

On December 17, 2020, an online world premier event for Season 3, Episode 1 was hosted by the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center.[17] Season 3 will stream on Netflix starting March 25, 2021.[18]

I paid to see the first on December 17th and a Milwaukee JCC offered the first three episodes this past weekend. Three episodes in, season three is every bit as good as the prior seasons.

OOOOOOOOOOHhh... you lucky dog!!!!

I would ask you for spoil ins because I love to know but I know others would jump me so I have to wait

but just tell u s.. do they move the action to US or stay in Israel? They were talking about moving it to
Williamsburg NY..

just say yes or no..

Still in Israel. Otherwise, my lips are sealed. There is supposed to be an American version being made but the story line is nothing like the original. I learned of these things on the Facebook discussion group which actually has very interesting posts.

Oh thanks for revealing a little.. Will help to survive the last three hours of the wait LOL.

So the American one would be different. I don't Facebook so I would never know. If you could share m ore would be awesome.

I wonder how different it will be. I think one reason why people like this show is how down to Earth, now family centered it is and how sheltered from the winds of the world and politics it is. In a way it provides some break and rest from those things and let reflect on things that in each of us connect with things that are most important.

I think that the whole point of Shtisel is that it has the denationalization removed and that alone provides some serenity to the viewer..
That is why this shows despite seemingly to be slow and boring is so refreshing and so calming to the mind.. because we are being bombarded by action and constant aggressiveness of the news of the world.. this show is removed from all this.

Could not sleep so I just as well turn it on and... indeed at 3am sharp it showed up. First time in my Netflix life I waited for something to come up and witnessed it actually arriving on time. Funny feeling.

But back to Shtisel.. so I just finished the first episode.. and OMG... the show is as good as someone who saw it said..
but why.. why!... ten minutes before the end.. why... I don't want to spoil it but going to sleep heavy hearted...

What do you think guys?

I also Like that there is love and pain. Love and respect for community and the elderly. The dad tells ask akiva to go move the grandma’s tv - it’s almost 10 pm and akiva goes. The conversations are very realistic. The music is lovely and the acting is phenomenal. When the dad delivers a speech or story- his delivery is perfect (pausing, inflection, etc.). The characters are well developed so you have emotional attachments to them. You could feel the wife’s desperation for an abortion and feel sad for her she didn’t get one and then feel the husband’s defeat when he learned they were having a 6th baby (after he’d recently told his oldest how he wishes for solitude more than anything else- both parents felt trapped ask you felt for both of them.)

PP. I agree with you and I think a large portion of the Shtisel fan base is like you. But there is also a large portion that just likes any opportunity to gawk at the "exotic," here being Chasidic or ultra-Orthodox Jews and doesn't care about accuracy in terms of details of dress or customs or even remotely plausible dialogue. I think those people will like A Touch Away.

I don’t think it’s available there anymore.

Just checked and you're right! I wonder when that happened.

The beauty of Shtisel is not really about orthodox judaism. That is just one of the facets. It's truly the storytelling aspect and the humanity of the series.

I think it's both.
