Agreed, although I admit to being disturbed by (and frankly concerned for) those who seem ready to fire Duran because he happened to call a snow day.

This is not about snow day. This is aboit total and compete failure to teach the younger grades.

Duran and the entire SB are a total failure for our children. How do we get them out? I wonder what's going on with that lawsuit. It feels like there's no end in sight for this nonsense to stop. Meanwhile, our kids are falling further and further behind..

Does anyone else think that some people are using their angst and anxieties about COVID against Duran and APS, perhaps in an attempt to obtain some control over a situation they otherwise cannot control? JFC, people, there is a weather event today. Your kid will still get into Harvard, especially when they write their heartbreaking essay about life seemed irretrievably broken when DL was canceled due to weather.

Okay, SAHMommy.

Hahaha! Nope. Have worked in BigLaw the entire time I've been a parent, without a FT babysitter once the kids were in school. I won't pretend it hasn't been super stressful, but I'm not going to bitch at APS, Duran or Mother Nature because I had something else on my schedule that day.

Given that, one might think you would have a little bit of empathy for other working parents who are struggling right now, but I guess not.

I’m sure they thought it would be nice for kids to be kids for 5 minutes and make a snowman in the snow instead of sitting in front of a computer again all day. Turns out this is mainly a sleet storm, so the DC weather but then in the ass. I believe their intentions were good though. And lord knows my high schooler could use a mental health day today.

My middle schooler still has a bunch of assignments due today and tomorrow, so he won't get a real day off anyway.

With no snow. Ice, sleet yes, but no snow. Fun times to play outside.

Ice is WORSE . It’s way more dangerous for school employees to go in on ice.

Way more dangerous to get to your computer?? I get closing buildings. That makes sense. DL? Too icy between your kitchen and office???

Do you understand that if schools are considered open for the day, nutrition staff HAS to report. Why? Because meals HAVE to be provided on a sxhool day. Custodians HAVE to report. Admin HAS to report. Any federally mandated schedules tests like ACCESS/WIDA HAVE to happen? No of course you don’t because the world revolves around you and hating teachers.

The buildings were already closed for the day, so no those people weren't reporting. I really DGAF but canceling DL is beyond ridiculous.

My kid is a senior and we're beyond done with APS but I feel for the people who have to work and have little kids.

You keep saying you don’t care but your posting about it says otherwise.

No I just like egging people like you on.

My kid already got into college so I truly don’t care. I come here for entertainment.

3rd time you claim not to care. The more you say it the less we believe you.

Yet you’re still posting too. I can do this all day.

Difference is I never claimed “not to really care.” I’m not the one mad about a snow day when my kid is an 18 year old 3 months from graduation.

Every kid I teach has absolutely never questioned whether a snow day is warranted or not. They just enjoy it. Y’all really come in here and use your kids as puppets, your son does not care at all there is no online school today.

DP. They can think it doesn’t make sense but still enjoy it anyway. PP didn’t say her kid was complaining, only that it didn’t make sense. My kid’s don’t get it either, but they’re definitely not complaining.

As I stated. Closing buildings doesn’t mean it’s not a school day. This is the time of year federally mandated WIDA testing is taking place. You cannot do it online. If it’s a school day, those tests have to happen. If it’s a school day MEALS HAVE to be provided . You can’t just close buildings and still have a school day because there are certain things tied to having a school day that don’t go away if buildings are closed.

DP. Last night's announcement said all buildings and offices were closed for today, all in-person services were cancelled, and only essential personnel to report unless instructed otherwise by supervisor.

This morning's announcement was that all distance learning is cancelled for today, all buildings and offices were closed for today, all in-person services were cancelled, and only essential personnel to report unless instructed otherwise by supervisor. Literally the only difference between the two announcements was that distance learning is cancelled. Meal service and stuff was already cancelled as of last night. So your explanation doesn't make sense.

The change would make sense if they had some kind of weather related utility issue that took down some portion of the APS technology infrastructure so they can't do distance learning today.

Exactly - It infuriates me that there is no explanation provided. Who holds Duran accountable here? The kids have 1/2 day next Thursday (literally about an hour of school), and no school on Friday. The reduced instruction this year is insane. Why does Duran not care about our children learning??? How long are we going to suffer through his leadership?

Well that has absolutely nothing to do with the snow day, which I think was a mistake for the record, but those days are for parent teacher conferences and happen every year regardless of distance learning.

Yup. APS has completely given up on teaching the younger grades. Did you see the Glebe plan to offer only 40 minutes or 40+30 minutes of in person instruction on hybrid days, with the rest via iPad? For third graders. It's insane.

Older kids may need a homework day, but my 7 yo is bored out of her mind. We've been stuck inside because of bad weather + the pandemic for far too long. School could be a good distraction. She doesn't need another day with nothing to do. APS please step it up and engage her. Remedial content and constant cancelations aren't cutting it.

What are they getting now via virtual learning? Truly curious.

Of course the kids don’t care! My kids would happily sit on the couch and watch YouTube for months in end. It’s my job to try to get them an education.

Remember that movie with Jackie Gleason and Richard Pryor called "The Toy" where Gleason hires Pryor to be a human toy for his son, mostly to get out of having to deal with his son? I thought of that when I read this post. Why don't you step it up and engage her? It's called parenting.

I'm so frustrated by all the messaging that kids should enjoy this day with their families and that kids and teachers deserve a day off. It is extremely tone-deaf for working families where the parents do not get a day off.

(Not to mention the day off this Monday for President's day, or the day and a half off kids have next week due to conferences). I can't exactly tell my employer I need the day off today. (And I can't find a kids camp, or group playdate as I would do in normal circumstances). Instead, yet another day of too much junk-food screen time for my kids, which is the last thing they need at this point in the pandemic.

NP. BECAUSE PARENTS HAVE TO WORK TODAY TO KEEP THE ECONOMY RUNNING AND SUPPORT THEIR HOUSEHOLDS. We do not live in Leave it to Beaver land where everyone has stay at home parents. And even in the 1950s, It. Took. A. Village. because humans are social creatures.

Are they anticipating power outages due to ice? (I am.)

My kids have had a break for 11 months with no schooling from Mid March -September, and the bare minimum this year. There is absolutely no reason why they can’t do virtual learning.

A) That hasn't been my experience at all. School is tough for my kids, both emotionally and intellectually. B) You don't know that there is absolutely no reason why they can't do virtual learning without an explanation from the district. It could be legit, it could not.
