HHI and type of coffee you drink?

Anonymous
HHI $550K. 365 brand Morning Roast, sometimes another one if there's a sale. Used to get beans before children, but can't be bothered during early mornings with two small children.

In the past two years, our HHI just increased from $290 to $465. I still buy Kirkland brand whole bean House Blend.

La Colombe but DH doesn’t drink coffee

We *love* La Colombe. If you’re ever in NYC, go to their actual cafe, it’s even more amazing.

La Colombe is from Philadelphia, where they also have a distillery. Multiple La Colombe cafés in DC. We order from their website and have it delivered. Grind beans daily and brew using a Bonavita drip machine. HHI 7 figures.

Rishi tea.

I'm wealthy.

HHI $300k
Lost Sock beans or LaVazza preground espresso, made in a Aeropress. Used to have a Blue Bottle subscription.
Sometimes we get beans at Rare Bird.

Husband drinks La Columbe beans he makes into cold brew and then turns into nitro cold brew with our NitroBrew machine.

I drink Diet Coke or Kitu Super Coffee in the afternoon.

We buy their beans from Whole Foods, I think wegmans has them too? I didn’t know they had DC locations, I looked up once and they didn’t at the time but that must have been years ago. Definitely a shorter trip than to NYC

$500k HHI

One button, Jura Espresso machine (grinds the beans and froths the milk and squirts the espresso all with the touch of one button).

We alternate buying our favorite whole coffee beans. My husband makes me a macchiato or latte for my first cup in bed. Before I log on for work I make a cappucino.

We bought the machine back in 2005 when I first started working from home full-time and stopped hitting the coffee shops.

It is better than Starbucks and any high end coffee shop I've been to, but not better than anything I get in Spain/Italy/France/Germany/Austria---but pretty close!!

Quality of the beans matters.

$450K
We use a french press each morning with whatever is on sale at the grocery store: Peets, Starbucks etc. Our favorite is the IKEA coffee that is ground for a French press but we don't get up there much (when we do I'll buy 8 or so bricks).

250k HHI (but I'm the sole coffee drinker). Usually grind beans from Whole Foods brands (about $9/lb). Burr grinder plus Bonavita drip. However, this week I had to break into my emergency Bustello stash because I ran out of beans and I think I actually prefer it!

I recently got more systematic about weighing and measuring for the exact coffee taste I want using my kitchen scale, and it makes a big difference!

Our machine has a K-cup maker and I usually have one of those in the afternoon even though they're gross. We have a Nespresso that I use for after dinner espresso. I drink a lot of coffee.

They are so gross! One of the perks of WFH - no more coffee pods.

I'm surprised you buy pre-ground at that HHI. No shame, of course, but I'm wondering if that's a time-saver or if you really just can't tell a difference.

I think coffee snobbery is largely an affectation that lets middle class people feel like they have extremely sophisticated tastes. Also if you grind it the night before you're not getting any real freshness benefit; if you grind it the morning of you wake up the house; if you wait to grind it until people are awake you didn't really need coffee in the first place.

Haha, I just realized you were talking to the *other* PP who drinks pre-ground at a $450k HHI, not me. Sorry to answer for you, PPP.

This is PPP, your response is spot on! Plus, I'm not the coffee maker/setter in the house. So, as long as it's ready for me to drink before sunrise, I don't complain!

forgot to add ... I take my coffee dark and strong with milk and sugar, so that's probably why I don't mind the Bustelo. But I was surprised that the Bustelo tasted pretty much as fresh as my ground coffee beans, at least right when I opened the brick. Would love it if someone did a blind taste test with Bustelo and coffee snobs ...
