Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Excellent post |
This is a great post. You can read much of this when a poster decides to elaborate on what they mean by doing well. |
MCPS disagrees. MCPS has spent a good amount of money implementing mental health curriculum - Be Well 365? |
Yep, this is so true. I have heard these reasons from multiple other moms when talking about DL. |
+2. And the fact that the PPs are so incredibly defensive about this list--which is not remotely mean-spirited, unlike all the "your kids are too lazy for DL" and "who cares about kids' mental health" posts--is telling. Its crystal clear that there is a wide range of meaning to "working well." And another problem with the reports: as someone now teleworking (leaning out) and sitting around a LOT of DL, I'm always shocked when other neighbors/parents tell me it's going "great" when they have no idea what their DC is doing (or not doing) all day because of a pod, daycare, etc. (So "great" based on....?) |
+1000 My hs and ms kids are better adjusted, liking school more, doing better in classes, and sharing more about their days. They are just less stressed overall. I would love if they went back on a 10-4 schedule - but that won't happen unfortunately. |
Yep - this is us but I absolutely no it's not everyone and we are lucky in that regard. Just like we were somewhat unlucky in the beforetimes when distractions, sleep deprivation, and lack of school communication were major issues causing depression and fights that are non-existent now. |

PP who wrote the list here. I am glad it's truly going well for you. I am also glad that you have the insight to understand that your experience isn't universal. |
PP here. Yes, I wasn't intending to be negative about DL, and the reaction surprised me. I don't think it should be controversial. I have zero patience for the "your kid is just lazy" or "you just need to parent better" crowd, especially because that latter can easily be turned around on them (if you don't think your kid will do well in concurrent, you just need to "parent better"). Posters who write like that just sound ignorant. |
This seems like a good list. The one thing I would add is "My child is in a specialized program that is probably doing a better job with DL than other programs because there was already substantial cross-subject collaboration and/or videos were already part of the curriculum." |
For my child who is in such curriculum - its not that the curriculum lends itself to DL - it really doesn't - but the teachers are all so much more engaged in the program that they are moving heaven and earth to try to make it work despite the challenging circumstances. The kids are also much more engaged. Plus the children in the classes are not at wildly different levels of comprehension and engagement - unlike my child's non-specialized classes. |
Yes, this is a reasonable meaning too. People can have such wildly different experiences with DL depending on the teacher and program. |
Actually none of those for my kid. He’s genuinely managing well even though it’s 6th grade and a brand new school. BUT, he needs to be in school and MCPS are failing all kids by not having a reasonable plan to get back to the classroom. Also although it works ok for my older kid. It’sa disaster for my third grader. |
The poster who keeps blaming parents for kids mental health is a nasty selfish person lacking in any empathy. Yes, lack of school is causing mental health problems. Anxiety is rocketing among children. Isolation is one factor and it’s also causing regression in behaviors for many kids. I was able to find my kid a therapist and was lucky to have insurance to cover it, but his need for therapy was directly related to school closures and would be solved instantly by being back at school in person. So not only is the school not addressing this but the lack of school is a direct causal factor. The nasty poster knows this but for some reason it feels good to her to attack desperate parents to meet her fear driven goal of keeping school closed. |
