"DL is working well for my kid"

Anonymous
I’m the PP who said I pulled my kids out.

We tried DL and it was a complete disaster. We are homeschooling, which is not sustainable long term either. But it’s much better than DL. I would love to send my kids back to mcps in person next year. But, at the rate we’re going, there will be no in person next year either.

If you pulled your kids out, then why post on the MCPS board when comparing what happened last year to this year's DL is very different. You really didn't give it a good try and you have no reason to post if you are not participating in it.

Its not MCPS job to deal with mental health troubles. If your child has mental health issues, that's a parenting fail as the real issue is you have not addressed it. Instead of taking your kid to testify take him to a therapist.

DP. The situational mental health issues caused by the school district's choice are important. Don't minimize them.

"My kid is doing well with DL" means any of the below:

- I don't know enough about education to truly ascertain how well my kid is doing, but she's quiet and not bugging me, so I am calling it "doing well."
- I know a lot about education and my kid learns better without distraction from other kids and I see true progress.
- My kid was bullied at school and seems happier and less anxious, and I don't really care about actual education now.
- My kid isn't learning anything but I know she will catch up so I am not worried.
- I like having absolute and total control over every single interaction my child has with anyone else in life.
- My kid was subjected to racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia at school and can focus on learning now.
- My kid isn't learning anything but I am deeply worried about covid-19.
- My kid is was already getting a subpar education and DL isn't any worse.
- I like hovering so I can hear everything the teacher says.
- My kid has a trust fund so education doesn't matter.
- My kid has a pod, dedicated schoolroom at home, and tutors.
- My kid is struggling but we have vulnerable family members and are making a familial sacrifice.
- My kid is learning a lot and I can properly evaluate growth.

The problem is that you really can't know what individuals mean because they have wildly different interpretations.

Why are you posting when this isn't true and you are just looking to slam DL and aren't doing DL?

What? Where am I slamming DL? We are doing DL and continuing with DL. But I don't live in a magical fairyland where I believe every parent who claims their child is doing well in DL is telling the truth or even capable of understanding how well their child is doing. The fact is that some people say that their kid is doing well in DL and it's true, sometimes they say it and it's wishful thinking, and sometimes they say it and it's utter delusion. And sometimes it's covering serious issues like abuse or parental mental illness. This can all be simultaneously true.

And also includes the corollary principle that those of us who question how much meaningful learning or socialization is actually going on, or wonder how less privileged groups are faring, even in light of the significant drop in test scores and attendance, are simply "looking for childcare" or "trying to kill teachers."

You seem awfully intent on putting words in peoples' mouths. What about letting the folks for whom this is working speak for themselves, and then you can speak for yourself, and we can all share our experiences instead of assuming the worst?

+1,000,000.

The people who say DL is going well are giving their experience. The fact that the Open Er Up faction loses their collective minds with every post is because they are trying to silence people from giving their experience, and pretend that their own experiences and opinions are the only ones and are correct.

It's so glaringly transparent. They are fooling no one.

We are in a pandemic. They had no other choice but to shut down schools. If your kids are that fragile and something is going on at home that they cannot DL, you as a parent need to fix that.

If they stayed off their phones, they would get plenty of sleep. If they take too many hard classes they are struggling with and stay up all night doing HW, that is on you as parents.

My first bell was 7:03am and I did fine. Many generations of high schoolers and farmer's kids are up with sun and go to bed at 10-11pm. Your kids are snowflakes because of you

Ridiculous. When have schools, or even this country, ever, truly, really addressed mental health?
